City of Lorraine raises funds for new fire station

LORRAINE - There will be a hog feed and street dance starting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 6 in Lorraine on Main Street to raise money for a new fire station. The band will be "The Classics, and the cost is a free will donation.

Work on World Trade Center Memorials underway

HOISINGTON - The word is out – Bruce Bitter of B&B Metal Arts was chosen to create the World Trade Center memorials to be placed in seven Kansas airports to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

HRC to hold play

Hoisington’s 115th Annual Labor Day celebration to hold basketball tournament

HOISINGTON - Once again the Hoisington Labor Day Committee will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The cost is $50 per four-man team. Team registrations and payment must be made by Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Ellinwood to decrease mill levy; to decrease August electric fuel charge

ELLINWOOD - At a budget study session this week, the Ellinwood City Council is looking at a proposed decrease of the city mill levy assessment for 2012 from 39.871 in 2011 to 39.845 mills in 2012.

EDH to continue project meetings

ELLINWOOD -At its meeting on Monday, the Ellinwood District Hospital Board said they will continue to hold further meetings on the improvement project determining feasability and viability of the project, said Richard Kimple, president of the board. The board is considering upgrades and renovations to the hospital and clinic.

John Carmon Ellison 1955-2013

John Carmon Ellison of Allen, Texas, 57, passed away on May 30, 2013. He was born on Sept. 3, 1955, in Fort Stewart, Ga., the son of John and Dee Ellison. On Nov. 28, 1995, John married Phyllis Taylor in Great Bend. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. John was also very proud of his police work; he started the SWAT program in Great Bend. John loved barbecue and cooking out, but most of all, he loved his family. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.

Ellinwood June Jaunt was a success

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood streets bustled with activity at the second annual June Jaunt in Ellinwood. Out-of-county license plates filled the parking lots in the city, and that, said Nancy Baird Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce director, was a sign of success.
