ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Community/School Library summer hours beginning May 31 are: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m. to noon.

EHS students receive awards

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood High School band senior member Nick Espinosa was the recipient of the nationally acclaimed John Philip Sousa Band Award. This award is given to the most outstanding senior band student. It recognizes those young musicians displaying superior musicianship, leadership, dependability, loyalty, cooperation and other qualities of conduct which school instrumental music programs strives to impart.

USD 355 builds bus barn

ELLINWOOD - USD 355 Ellinwood Board of Education has purchased property, 901 E. Santa Fe, in Ellinwood to begin building a bus barn. The property was purchased from the City of Ellinwood for $15,000 and dirt work is done, the BOE heard at its regular meeting.

Golf tournament

The 3rd annual Kans for Kids Golf Tournament was another outstanding success for the organization. There were 24 teams and 96 golfers that participated in the tournament as they opened their hearts for four Barton County boys living with childhood cancer.

Asst. Sec. of Parks and Tourism visits Great Bend

BARTON COUNTY - Assistant Secretary of Parks and Tourism Linda Craighead was in town last week and met with 20 local leaders from the Economic Development Committee, National Byway Committee, Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Friends of Cheyenne Bottoms and other community leaders. Members of the committees live throughout the area.

Kids fly high with America’s Promise program

ELLINWOOD - America's Promise, in collaboration with the Great Bend Airport Young Eagles Club, celebrated the end-of-the-year with the Fly Day earlier this year. Four grade school students from Ellinwood have taken part of America's Promise program throughout the year.

ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Rotary Club announces the 2013 theme for the After Harvest Festival Parade to be held at 10 a.m. July 2. This year's theme is "Home Is Where Our Story Begins." They are hoping registrants for the parade will incorporate this year's theme into their parade float.

Alan Fullbright Scholarships awarded

ELLINWOOD - The criterion for the Alan Fullbright Scholarship are a reflection of what was significant in Alan Fullbright's life. The 2013 scholarship recipients are Stephanie Troyer who will be majoring in Music Education and attending Barton Community College. She has held several offices in KAY, FBLA, International Club and was the Student Council secretary and vice president of her class.
