Every winter I look forward to watching the drama unfolding in the backyard, as birds and squirrels begin arriving at feeders, searching for and sometimes battling over food and even becoming food for predatory birds.
HOISINGTON - Hoisington High School student Chaz Stephens was hungry one day, and he and fellow classmate Drew Reisner along with Principal Meg Wilson brain-stormed a plan last fall to begin serving healthy snacks at a reasonable cost to students mid-morning. The students are finding that good nutrition makes a difference.
HOISINGTON - In December, Hoisington Main Street Inc. mailed out a survey to solicit ideas regarding what people liked the least and best regarding Hoisington's downtown. It asked what types of businesses should be established and events to hold. The results of the survey will be presented at a community meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at the Hoisington Activity Center meeting room, 1200 Susank Rd. The meeting is open to everyone.
HOISINGTON - Gambino's Pizza restaurant has reopened under new ownership Thursday, and will be offering more menu items and different hours.
HOISINGTON - The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation held its annual meeting on Monday and heard status reports as well as a program by Dr. Joshua Durham called, "Lend a Healthy Hand." The foundation has seen growth this year.
Ellinwood School District USD 355 has four at-large Board of Education openings up for election in April. The terms are for four years, and the deadline to file is Jan. 25. at the Barton county Clerk/ Election Office. Questions may be directed to US 355 Central Office at 620-564-3226.

ELLINWOOD - Amy Metro has been rehired by Unified School District 355, Ellinwood, as a part-time kindergarten teacher beginning Feb. 1, the school board decided at its regular meeting on Monday. She will work in the afternoon.
LORRAINE - After serving for one year, the seats of the Central Plains USD 112 interim school board will be up for election on April 5, and the elected members will take office July 1. The filing deadline is Jan. 25.
HOISINGTON - The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at the CBH Turnbull Safe Room.
ELLINWOOD - Nurses who need access to affordable health insurance or who can't afford to keep theirs under COBRA after losing their jobs can find relief from the Independent Nurses Association.
ELLINWOOD - The USD 355 School Board, at its regular meeting Monday night, agreed to take another step in the iPad initiate. Currently, about twenty percent of the certified staff have iPads. The board agreed to buy approximately 30 more so that the remaining staff would have an iPad.

ELLINWOOD - At its regular monthly meeting, the USD 355 school board made two appointments to the new Ellinwood Recreation Commission Board of Directors. They were Mel Waite for four years, and Rob Fisher for one year. The ERC will soon begin planning a budget, hiring a director, and making plans for 2014.
ELLINWOOD - "Stay Together" is the theme for this years conference/summer camp for families of children with disabilities in Romania on Aug. 21-24 offered by Star of Hope
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the city offices. On the agenda are the former city landfill, wearing in of new council members, Recreation Commission appointments, Main Street light poles, and executive session for real estate acquisition.
TOPEKA-Kansas schools and school districts were honored Thursday for their support of character education as part of the Kansas Schools of Character Recognition Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, the Kansas Character Education Initiative and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Rotary Club announces the 2013 theme for the After Harvest Festival Parade to be held at 10 a.m. July 2. This year's theme is "Home Is Where Our Story Begins." They are hoping registrants for the parade will incorporate this year's theme into their parade float.
HOISINGTON -On April 29 and April 30, the Hoisington Middle School vocal group performed its play "School Daze" at Roosevelt and Lincoln Elementary Schools. The vocal group is made up of 7th and 8th grade students from Hoisington Middle School.
