BARTON COUNTY - Assistant Secretary of Parks and Tourism Linda Craighead was in town last week and met with 20 local leaders from the Economic Development Committee, National Byway Committee, Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Friends of Cheyenne Bottoms and other community leaders. Members of the committees live throughout the area.
HOISINGTON - Hoisington Middle School teacher Tamera Irvin has been nominated for the "Kansas Teacher of the Year."
ELLINWOOD - America's Promise, in collaboration with the Great Bend Airport Young Eagles Club, celebrated the end-of-the-year with the Fly Day earlier this year. Four grade school students from Ellinwood have taken part of America's Promise program throughout the year.

HOISINGTON - Members of the Hoisington High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Chapter will be traveling to the national meeting in Anaheim, Calif. on July 9-14. Those attending will be Drew Reisner, Kayla Reisner and Rondi Denning along with advisor Karla Reisner.
The regular May Ellinwood Board of Education meeting has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. on May 18. Items on the agenda include a budget update, the Parents as Teachers Program, the fee schedule (first read), and the permanent Eagle logo. Also included are supplemental contracts.

HOISINGTON - The USD 431 Comprehensive Planning Committee, which were citizens of Hoisington appointed by school board members, met earlier this April to discuss strengths and weaknesses of USD 431, at a meeting facilitated by Kansas Association of School Board Deputy Director Dr. Doug Moeckel. They presented their ideas to the school board on Monday night.

John Carmon Ellison of Allen, Texas, 57, passed away on May 30, 2013. He was born on Sept. 3, 1955, in Fort Stewart, Ga., the son of John and Dee Ellison. On Nov. 28, 1995, John married Phyllis Taylor in Great Bend. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. John was also very proud of his police work; he started the SWAT program in Great Bend. John loved barbecue and cooking out, but most of all, he loved his family. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.
HOISINGTON - Hoisington Cemetery employees request that all arrangements and grave decorations on the ground and not at the head of the grave be removed to allow for maintenance of the grounds by Monday, June 10.
ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood streets bustled with activity at the second annual June Jaunt in Ellinwood. Out-of-county license plates filled the parking lots in the city, and that, said Nancy Baird Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce director, was a sign of success.
