CLAFLIN -The governing body of the City of Claflin met in regular session, Monday, February 11, 2013 in the city building. Present were: Mayor Michael Urban, Councilpersons Kirk Schneweis, Kelly Nixon, Casey Hubbard, Dan Michaelis and Leon Oberle. Also present: City Attorney Bob Suelter, City Clerk Patricia Schmidt, Robert Gunder, Richard Hayes, Curtis Wolf, Tyler Allison, Liz Praeger and Randy Oeser.
ELLINWOOD - USD 355 Board of Education is continuing with a series of strategic planning meetings for the district that includes residents, employees and others interested in the future of the district. The group met on Monday night.

ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood High School Forensics Team earned a trophy for 1st place in team sweepstakes at the KC Maverick Invitational at Kiowa County High School in Greensburg on Sat., Feb. 16. Nineteen schools competed in the meet, and Ellinwood beat 2nd place Sterling by a margin of forty points.
HOISINGTON - The Clara Barton Hospital Foundation is currently seeking applicants for its 2013 health care career scholarships. The Foundation desires to present several individuals with scholarships. Scholarship amount varies with the merits of the application and funds available from the endowments. HOISINGTON - The Hoisington City Council met at its regular meeting on Monday. There was more discussion about privitizing the city's trash service.
ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood High School recently attended the 2013 District Future Business Leaders of America Conference hosted by Canton-Galva High School. The students attended the conference and many placed in the competitive events. The next competitive event will be the State FBLA Conference April 3-5 in Topeka.
ELLINWOOD - Long-time Ellinwood resident Richard Kimple has been named the Rotary Club's "Distinguished Citizen" at the club's annual Valentine's Banquet on a cool, crisp late winter evening.
ELLINWOOD - Bank of the West today announced that Freddy Gunn Jr. has been named Bank of the West assistant vice president and branch manager. In his role, Gunn is responsible for the overall operations, customer service, performance and profitability of the branch, as well as community outreach activities. He will be based at the Bank of the West branch located at 19 N. Humboldt Avenue in Ellinwood.
HOISINGTON - The Hoisington High School Cardinal Forensics Team placed 4th recently at the Great Bend invitational forensics tournament, missing third by one point.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood City Council met at its regular meeting on Tuesday and approved a request from Rob Dove is to lease a tract 100 feet by 175 feet at the airport under the same terms and conditions as a recent lease by Dennis Lebbin. The requested tract lies directly east of the tract of Dennis Lebbin.
CLAFLIN - Claflin will hold its 3rd annual 5K/10K run or walk at 7:30 a.m. on May 25 beginning at Claflin City Park.
ELLINWOOD - The criterion for the Alan Fullbright Scholarship are a reflection of what was significant in Alan Fullbright's life. The 2013 scholarship recipients are Stephanie Troyer who will be majoring in Music Education and attending Barton Community College. She has held several offices in KAY, FBLA, International Club and was the Student Council secretary and vice president of her class.
