HHS students to explore careers

PSR students host guest

ELLINWOOD - St. Joseph Parish School of Religion students shared a class with a special visitor, newly ordained Bishop John Brungardt, the sixth Bishop of Dodge City Diocese. A soft-spoken man with encouraging words and provoking thoughts for all ages, Bishop shared a story of the prodigal son, a familiar Bible story to some. City to change special purpose vehicle registration fee

ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood City Council voted Tuesday evening to change the golf cart and special purpose vehicle registration fee. The city changed the vehicle registration and proof of insurance to a one-time fee and showing of insurance, instead of annually.

USD 431 approves student trip

HOISINGTON - Hoisington High School juniors and seniors will have a new opportunity for adventure with a trip to New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. scheduled for the spring of 2012.

American Legion to hold dinner

ELLINWOOD - The Sons of the American Legion steak night is on Saturday at the American Legion in Ellinwood. Serving starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is $12 a plate and includes filet, baked potato, salad and bread.

Wheatland school celebrated

ELLINWOOD - Remember the good ol' days of the 1950s and 60s? In retrospect, those days may not have all been "good", but nonetheless, can all be looked at as part of early life for persons in their 50s and 60s. The price of gas was 30 cents; eggs and a gallon of milk were 54 and 49 cents respectively; stamps, four cents; and the cost of a new home was $18,000. Wouldn't people give anything for that now?

Library to host WWII exhibit

ELLINWOOD - In 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland and started a world wide war with unmatched death, violence and fire power, and the lives of 60 million people were extinguished, Ellinwood is remembering its own at the Ellinwood/Community School Library with an exhibit of those who served, and of those who never returned.

Council approves changes to utility connection fees; shutoffs

HOISINGTON - The Hoisington City Council approved at its Monday meeting, Ordinance 1457 establishing regulations and fees utility services. The fee for establishing electrical service is $100, and the fee for establishing water service is $50. The person requesting utility service must provide a proof of ownership or a rental lease agreement in addition to a government issued photo identification.

'Meet the Candidate' USD 355 forum to be held

ELLINWOOD - Candidates running for USD 355 School Board have been invited to participate in a "Meet the Candidate" discussion forum at 6 p.m. on March 14 at the Ellinwood Community/School Library. This is an opportunity for the public to meet the candidates and hear their responses to various issues facing the schools. Six candidates have filed for four positions.

EHS Forensics places

ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood High School Forensics Team placed first in team sweepstakes in a 19-team meet held at Kiowa County High School in Greensburg on Feb. 19. The team earned first-place trophies two weekends in a row, having also placed first at Southeast of Saline in February.

Society to hold banquet

LLINWOOD - Jim Gray, who is the founder of the Cowboy Society, and a speaker for the Kansas Humanities Council, began his presentation at the Ellinwood Community Historical Society annual meeting by saying "A lot of the stuff in movies, isn't exactly right but it makes good stories. You can always tell if they don't know what they are talking about."
