Free bridge lessons offered

HOISINGTON - Card players learn the basics of bridge, or sharpen bridge skills with free "Modern Style Basic Bridge" lessons. A two-part series of bridge lessons will be offered on two consecutive Wednesdays, March 16 and 23 at 5-6 p.m. If you can, stay and play a couple hands after the lesson, enjoy a glass of wine, and have your questions answered.

Crime Stoppers offer rewards

This is Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings speaking for Crime Stoppers. Early morning on Feb. 8, three businesses in the 100 block of Main Street in Hoisington were burglarized. Entry to all three was by breaking the door locks in the alley of the businesses. A laptop computer, cash and a hard drive were stolen Loss and damage was $1,300.

Reif receives donation

Eldon Reif of Hoisington has been selected as a winner in the America's Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM program, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. The Monsanto Fund sponsors the program, and winning farmers designate a local nonprofit organization to benefit from the donations. Reif has designated Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation, located in Hoisington, to receive the donation.

Rotary Club chooses 'Distinguished Citizen of the Year'

EHS forensics earns first place

ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood High School forensics team earned a trophy for first place in team sweepstakes in the 1-2A Division in Salina on Feb. 12. EHS had the third highest team total out of all twenty 1-5A schools competing. Connor Birzer placed second in Original Oration, and Birzer and partner Hannah Maddy placed second in Duet Acting. Alan Fullbright Scholarships awarded

ELLINWOOD - The criterion for the Alan Fullbright Scholarship are a reflection of what was significant in Alan Fullbright's life. The 2013 scholarship recipients are Stephanie Troyer who will be majoring in Music Education and attending Barton Community College. She has held several offices in KAY, FBLA, International Club and was the Student Council secretary and vice president of her class.
