'Divas' excited, ready for fourth annual 'Extravaganza' this Saturday

The "Quilting Divas" of Larned will present their fourth annual "Holiday Extravaganza," this time for 2010, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Larned. Many unique, handmade items will be available for purchase, "just in time for Christmas."

Santa Fe Trail Center hopes to win $2,500 from Monsanto Fund

If you farm 250 acres or more, of corn, soybeans and/or vegetables, in Pawnee County, you are being asked to pick up a registration form or enter online - in the Monsanto Fund's American's Farmers GROW COMMUNITIES. Communities will receive $2,500 each from the fund, i.e. one eligible nonprofit organization in Pawnee County will receive $2,500. It is up to county farmers to help decide where it goes. Program on historic homes in area set for Nov. 21 at SFTC

The staff of the Santa Fe Trail Center invites the public to a program on historic buildings on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the museum. Dr. Merlene Baird will present a visual tour of historic homes in Kansas with an emphasis on houses close to the Larned area. Information will be given about keeping the buildings historic and well-preserved versus remodeled.

Fire of unknown origin does much damage at Fischer farm

A fire of unknown origin did extensive damage Saturday night to a machine storage shed at the Lee F. Fischer farm southwest of Larned. Bill Clapham, Larned fire chief, said the machine shed was full, he believed, with a camper, a pickup and other items inside. He said he had "no idea" of the total amount of damage done. Carr honored for years of service to sFTC's governing board

Longtime board member Larry Carr was honored at the Fort Larned Historical Society's annual meeting last Monday at the Santa Fe Trail Center. Board President Tom Seltmann thanked Carr for his many years of service as he steps down from the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum's governing board. Carr's service on the board of directors spanned 24 years, from 1986 to 2010.

FSB Church is place to drop off shoe box gifts

Larned is ready to collect Christmas cheer in the form of a shoe box. Local residents have set a goal of 200 gift-filled shoe boxes and by the end of National Collection Week, every Operation Christmas Child drop-off site hopes to be bursting with these gifts of love that bring joy to needy children worldwide, according to Pastor Mark Slattery at Larned's First Southern Baptist Church.

Santa, wagon rides, photos, refreshments set for Dec. 4

There are going to be a lot of Christmas-y things going on on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2nd and State streets in Larned. One of them will involve George Weber of Great Bend as Santa Claus, in his wagon drawn by his 14-year-old mule, Babe. Babe is a jenny, or female. Weber made all of his wagon, he said, except for the axles and springs.

City to 'smoke' sewer system

The City of Larned is concerned about possible leaks in the city's sanitary sewer system. Leaks in the system can allow large amounts of rain water to enter the city's wastewater system, City Manager Don Gaeddert said Saturday.
