The 2010 Salvation Army Fund Drive in Pawnee County begins Nov. 29, the Monday following Thanksgiving. The three-week drive concludes Thursday, Dec. 23.
Members of the Quilting Bees guild met on Nov. 16. In the absence of the president, Virginia Bauer and Alice Clapsaddle chaired the meeting. Announcements included the Dec. 7 Christmas dinner and party at 6:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church. Members are to bring a dish to share and a gift to exchange. The snowflake fat quarters will be drawn as well as the friendship blocks.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Mary Beth Herrmann, RN, registered nurse, administrator and health officer for the Pawnee County Health Department in Larned, was one of 10 winners selected Friday, Oct. 22, at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, Kansas City, Mo., from several hundred Nursing the Heart of Healthcare award nominees.

The "Quilting Divas" of Larned will present their fourth annual "Holiday Extravaganza," this time for 2010, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Larned. Many unique, handmade items will be available for purchase, "just in time for Christmas."

The staff of the Santa Fe Trail Center invites the public to a program on historic buildings on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the museum. Dr. Merlene Baird will present a visual tour of historic homes in Kansas with an emphasis on houses close to the Larned area. Information will be given about keeping the buildings historic and well-preserved versus remodeled.
A fire of unknown origin did extensive damage Saturday night to a machine storage shed at the Lee F. Fischer farm southwest of Larned. Bill Clapham, Larned fire chief, said the machine shed was full, he believed, with a camper, a pickup and other items inside. He said he had "no idea" of the total amount of damage done. The Larned Fire Department received the fire call shortly before 9 p.m., Clapham said. It was a "bad fire," i.e., he said that everything went downhill after the firefighters arrived and tried to extinguish it.
