NETTLETON (AP) - The old mansion still sits near the banks of the dry Arkansas River - one of the only remains of this town with a tragic tale.
Jordaan Memorial Library's Book Club will meet Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m. The theme is Develop a Love For Reading. Come prepared to talk about the books you have read recently or share an old favorite. Discover a new author. Books, both old and new, you may not have seen before will be available to check out. Nathan Chlumsky of Larned and Michael Alnore of Rozel will be re-opening the Larned Family Israeli/Okinawan Kobra Kai Karate and Mixed Martial Arts Academy. The school is located at 505 Broadway, next to Vanley's, in Larned. Mr. Chlumsky will serve as the head instructor of the Academy and Mr. Alnore will be the assistant head instructor at the Larned Academy. Jerry Buxton, the Great Bend Tribune's reporter covering Pawnee County, died Saturday at the Hospice House in Hutchinson after a brief, but valiant, battle with cancer. He was a valuable member of the Tribune team and a long-time friend. Below are some remembrances written by his co-workers at the paper. His obituary appears on page 3 of today's Tribune.
"Madame Editeur: (That's what the French froggies call a publisher. An editor is a redacteur (redactor, a la the CiA?). Anyhoo, the break room is out of coffee, i.e. there's enough for one more carafe to be made today, and then, thirst, thirst thirst. Merci beaucoup."
Students from six Kansas high schools will be honored Thursday, Feb. 10, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.
The Kansas Room in Jordaan Memorial Library is a collection of books by Kansas Authors and information about Kansas History. Newspapers printed in Larned are on microfilm and a reader printer is available to read the papers. There is also information on pioneer families in Pawnee County.
