GB wrestlers dominate at Girls State

On March 22, Breanna Ridgeway and Natalie Garza traveled to McPherson to battle in the Girls State Tournament. Both girls won their brackets convincingly. Breanna opened up with a 14-0 win in her first match, and followed that up with 2 pins. Natalie won both of the matches she wrestled with pins.

Central Kansas Roller Girls has first scrimmage

Central Kansas Roller Girls hosted their first scrimmage of the season. Derby girls from Junction City, Wichita, Topeka, and Salina all met on Saturday at Skateland in Hutchinson for a derby match. Spectators are welcome and anyone interested in joining in on the derby fun can come by and see what it is about. More NSOs (Non-skating Officials), refs, teammates and volunteers are needed. No skating skills are required to start roller derby, everything is taught. Central Kansas Roller Girls meet at Skateland in Hutchinson from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and from 10 a.m. to noon ...

GB wrestlers finish 3rd at Sub-districts

Great Bend Kids Wrestling Club traveled to Pratt on Saturday to compete against other western Kansas teams. The kids battled all day long at the Sub-Districts tournament and finished 3rd place out of 23 teams.

Kansas Youth Hunters in the Kansas Governors One Shot Turkey Hunt

The Kansas Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt announces Liza Ward of Great Bend has been chosen to be one of six Kansas youth to participate in the 29th annual Kansas Governor's One Shot Turkey Hunt. The event will be held April 16, 17 and 18, in El Dorado. Hunters from many states have committed to participate this year including Kansas Governor Sam Brownback.

State Tournament Musings

Sub-State basketball tournaments are underway and by Saturday night there will be tears, sadness and shouts of joy ringing out of area basketball arenas as winners move on to the "Big One", the State Finals! Heartbreak and sadness will be the temporary accompanying ghost of many as there is nothing left but to turn to spring sports after a painful loss. That's the trouble with tournaments; all but one end their season on a sad note.

Panel Discussion on Sports

The Rice County Historical Society's Coronado Quivira Museum will host a panel discussion celebrating sports and the way sports build and unite communities at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Coronado Quivira Museum, 105 West Lyon in Lyons. This panel discussion will be moderated by Sterling College History Professor Doug Boardman. The panel members are Junior Soeken, Jackie Rogers Schafer, Shane Cordell, and Bud Kelly.
