Larks’ homer sparks victory

HAYS - Great Bend Bat Cats pitcher Taylor Langston made one mistake and Hays Lark Michael Gangwish made him pay. Gangwish launched a three-run homer that sparked the Larks' 5-2 victory over the Bat Cats Tuesday.

HAYSVILLE – The Great Bend Bat Cats completed a four-game sweep of the Haysville Aviators 14-0 and 5-0 with a double shutout Sunday. Jack Waggoner and Ryan Patrick combined for a two-hit shutout. McPherson's Alex Ruxlow threw a five-hit shutout in the nightcap.

Sports are rife with great motivational speeches. Coaches are legendary for their fiery pre-game and halftime speeches that fire up and inspire their athletes to achieve what might have been considered impossible. Vince Lombardi, Knute Rockne, Bobby Knight, Lou Holtz and, yes, even Roy Williams and Bill Self come to mind. Of course, one of the greatest motivational cheerleaders of all time wasn't a coach, but a leader in battle, General George Patton, but then, wouldn't he have made a terrific and ferocious football coach?

Great Bend Bat Cat Hunter Romero delivered four hits in a 12-6 Jayhawk League baseball victory Saturday over the Haysville Aviators. Romero doubled in the first, singled in the third, singled in the seventh, and doubled in the eighth. The Bats entertain Haysville at 7 p.m. Sunday at Al Burns Field.

Derby Twins beat Bat Cats

The Derby Twins broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning for an 8-3 Jayhawk League baseball victory Tuesday over the Great Bend Bat Cats at Burns Field. The Bat Cats (5-10) lost their fifth straight game entering Wednesday's home game against Derby (10-4). The Bat Cats are 0-6 against the top three Jayhawk League teams.

LIBERAL – Liberal's Kyle Schmidt hit a pair of homers to spark the Bee Jays past the Great Bend Bat Cats 10-4 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Jayhawk Conference baseball series. Schmidt hit a two-run sixth-inning homer off Alex Ruxlow and a two-run seventh-inning homer off Austin Pritchard. Pitcher Jake Harrison (3-0) threw six innings.
