The Boys In Blue are turning their fans blue with their sub .500 play this season. Gone is the euphoria of two straight World Series appearances. Returned is the dullness that marked being a Royals' fan for the previous couple of decades.
It is notable that certain schools seem to excel in certain sports. Kansas in basketball and at least in this era, Kansas State in football. I am thinking more on the high school level, however. For years, in the 1950s through the 1970s, the Russell Broncos dominated high school basketball, winning numerous state championships. The McPherson Bullpups have done the same in boys basketball and you can include St. John and Scott City in that mix.
WICHITA – Today will mark the beginning of the 2016 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball and Baseball Championship Tournament at the Great Bend Sports Complex, located at 41 McKinley Street in Great Bend.
Due to heavy rainfall in Great Bend, the fourth annual "Cougar Open" Golf Tournament scheduled for today has been postponed and rescheduled for Friday, May 6, at Great Bend's StoneRidge Country Club Golf Course.
Love it or leave it, the NBA playoffs are underway. In one of the few sports where most everybody makes the playoffs, the NBA has mastered the art of "milking" a second season out of fans and the television networks.
COLLEGE football is taken seriously in some places. Last week Ohio State held their "Spring Game." They set a new national record for a spring game with 100,189 fans showing up. Oh yes, those were fans who paid for a ticket to be there! That scene is repeated at Alabama, Florida State, Tennessee, Michigan and many other places. Meanwhile a few more than 1,200 showed up in Lawrence to watch the struggling Jayhawks. There was no admission charge. It hasn't been determined if those 1,200 were paid to be there! Kansas State holds their Spring Game ...
There are a lot of fine sports facilities in the state of Kansas. It would be a fair assumption though, that few of them offer the historic significance, provide better eye-appeal, or furnish a better venue for watching a baseball game, than Larned's Moffet Stadium.
