WICHITA - It was a long, hot weekend for the 20-plus Special Olympians from Barton and surrounding counties as they took part in the Special Olympics Kansas Summer State Games this past weekend at Wichita State University.

Adult/youth bowling league has opening

Habitat for Humanity to host benefit June 18
Habitat for Humanity of Barton County is hosting their Third Annual Benefit Golf Tournament with hopes for raising at least $8,000. These funds will be acquired through a combination of team registration fees and hole sponsorships donated from local businesses.

Track, national marks fall in NHRA Lucas Oil event
Competition ended Sunday for the ninth running of the NHRA Lucas Oil Division V event in Great Bend on a cold and windy May afternoon where not only track records were set, but also national records were recorded at the S.R.C.A dragstrip during the event.

The Great Bend Middle School track and field team concluded its season on Tuesday after seven meets this season.

The start of the NHRA Lucas Division 5 race season kicked off this weekend with the National Hot Rod competition at Great Bend's S.R.C.A dragstrip. The Sunflower Rod and Custom Association is hosting the event, which concludes today after two days of qualifying, for the eighth year.

WAMEGO - Thompson Gymnastics of Great Bend recently competed in the AAU Missouri Valley Championships.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS TRACK
There were 24 Storm athletes taking part at Garden City and all came away with ribbons, and/or gold, silver or bronze medals. In all, there were five teams at the meet representing Garden City, Great Bend, Hays, Colby and Ulysses. The local team has three more weeks of practices before heading to the state track tournament June 3-5 at Wichita State University.

On April 30, the Great Bend Middle School track and field team finished up the 2013 track season by traveling to Hays and competing in a seven-team meet put on by TMP Middle School.
Family combinations featured during races at S.R.C.A. Drag Strip over weekend
It was a family affair for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder on the Plains at the S.R.C.A. Drag Strip this past weekend as Glen Amerine nearly shared the winner's circle with his son Craig, who was the runner up in Top Sportsman, and brothers battled in the final round for the Stock Eliminator championship.
