Bandits win Pratt tourney, ready for weekend

The 12-and-under Barton Bandits NBC baseball team from Great Bend recently won the Smoky Ford Annual Wood Bat Tournament in Pratt. The Bandits are riding a six-game winning streak and currently stand with a 23-6 record. They will compete in the Colby Callahan Memorial Baseball Tournament this weekend in Larned. Bandits win back-to-back titles

PRATT- It was a very rewarding Father's Day for the dad's of the Barton Bandits 13U baseball team. Behind exceptional pitching the Bandits successfully defended back-to-back tournament titles at the 2015 Smoky Ford Wood Bat Tournament held this weekend at the Green Sports Complex in Pratt.

Golden Belt swimmers win Hays meet

HAYS- The Golden Belt swim team recorded a first place finish at last weekend's meet in Hays. Aubrey Snapp placed first in all her events. Cal Dunekack and sister Camryn were standouts as well. Phane Pedigo and Dawson Clark were leaders in the high school boys events. All swimmers improved their times swimming in a 50 meter pool.

Blazers place second

The Barton Blazers took second place in the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park Premiere basketball tournament. The Blazers defeated the Reno County Elite, Beastmode, Bobcats, and CNBA. They lost in the championship game to Missouri Flight. The Blazers will be playing at home this coming weekend in the Great Bend MAYB tourney. Players include, Brock Skelton, Evan Campbell, Nick Wondra, Chance Sanger, Ray Kuhlman, Connor Griffith, Sam Ryan, and JJ Heredia.

Chiefs go 1-1 against Hutch

The Great Bend Chiefs split a Friday night doubleheader with Hutchinson at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Great Bend fell in the opening game of the series by a score of 9-8. The Chiefs regrouped and delivered a 13-3 routing of the visitors in game two for the 1-1 split. Friday's second game was called in the fourth by virtue of the mercy rule. Boys finish up camp

The Great Bend Middle School 8th grade boys wrapped up their four-day summer basketball camp. The boys worked hard all week and look forward to a great upcoming season of basketball. The boys will be led by coach Schmidd.

RUSSELL- The Great Bend Chiefs fell to their Russell counterparts by scores of 13-3 and 3-1 Wednesday night. The Chiefs fall to 8-7 on the season and will tangle with Hutchinson Friday night in doubleheader play at the Great Bend Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Charlie's Inside Corner: Recycling

The sports world is not unique to it but they are, perhaps, the best practitioners of it. I'm talking about recycling. The practice of recycling old coaches, old administrators, athletes too. Fire a coach here and he pops up as the head man somewhere else. Kick a general manager out and he becomes the brains somewhere else. The sports world is a very small fraternity. The latest example of this is the naming of Lew Perkins to the Board of Directors of USA Boxing, the governing body that oversees amateur boxing, including Gold Gloves and USA Olympic boxing.
