Chiefs split weekend action on the road

LARNED- Despite a rained out tournament at home the Great Bend Chiefs made the most of a wet weekend on Saturday traveling down the road to Larned and returning with a pair of victories. Following an 11-10 victory in the first half of a doubleheader the Chiefs pulled away with a 9-5 win in the series closer. Logan Perry was the starter in game one while Miguel Sanchez offered relief. Chiefs to play at Larned Saturday, Russell Sunday

The Great Bend Chiefs will play a doubleheader at Larned Saturday, May 13 beginning at 4 p.m. The Chiefs will then head north to Russell on Sunday for another twinbill starting at 2 p.m.

Chiefs Classic cancelled

Due to wet field conditions and the threat of continued showers and thunderstorms, this weekend's Great Bend Chief's Classic has been cancelled. The VIP Fastpitch softball tournament scheduled for the Great Bend Sports Complex this weekend has also been cancelled due to wet field conditions.

KCAC tourney returns to GBSC for 2016, 2017

WICHITA, Kan.- The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference is pleased to announce the City of Great Bend and the Great Bend Recreation Commission has renewed the agreement with the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and will host its 2016 and 2017 KCAC Baseball and Softball Championship Tournaments. All baseball and softball tournament games will be played at the Great Bend Sports Complex, Wednesday, May 4 - Saturday, May 7, 2016, and Wednesday, May 3 - Saturday, May 6, 2017.

The NFL had yet to reach the fan base it has today and professional basketball was a curiosity that was dominated by a few eastern cities. Baseball was the attention-getter for those interested in sports and it wasn't just professional baseball because amateur baseball was played in most every city and country town. It was especially true in central and western Kansas.

Great Bend Chiefs split at Dodge

The Great Bend Chiefs dropped a 2-1 decision to Dodge City in American Legion play Tuesday night. The Chiefs regrouped and defeated DC 7-4 in game two of the twinbill. Tristan Hall and Brett Bayse worked complete games in the series.

Seven Barton Blazers make All Star squad

SALINA- Seven Barton Blazers recently attended a four-day Heart of America camp in Salina and by camp's end, all seven were selected to participate in the prestigious 14-player All Star game. Players include Dalton Miller, Chance Sanger, Nick Wondra, Connor Griffith, Sam Ryan, Bryce Brown, and Ray Kuhlman.

Great Bend Rec to host tennis tournament

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a youth Party On The Court Tennis Tournament on Saturday, June 20th at Veterans Memorial Park 17th & McKinley. The tournament will offer both boys and girls singles divisions. There will be 12 & under, 14 & under, 16 & under and 18 & under divisions for the tournament.

Team Kansas Gold wrestling competes in Indianapolis

Team Kansas Gold wrestled in Indianapolis, Indiana June 4-7. The boy's finished fourth in the red/blue pool freestyle and fifth in the bronze/gold pool in Greco Roman. Great Bend's Gage Fritz participated in the event.

The Great Bend Quicksilver team won the 14 and under division at the Larned fast pitch tournament last weekend. Quicksilver team went undefeated on the weekend.

Boys finish up camp

The Great Bend Middle School 8th grade boys wrapped up their four-day summer basketball camp. The boys worked hard all week and look forward to a great upcoming season of basketball. The boys will be led by coach Schmidd.

Russell sweeps Great Bend in Legion play

RUSSELL- The Great Bend Chiefs fell to their Russell counterparts by scores of 13-3 and 3-1 Wednesday night. The Chiefs fall to 8-7 on the season and will tangle with Hutchinson Friday night in doubleheader play at the Great Bend Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Charlie's Inside Corner: Recycling

The sports world is not unique to it but they are, perhaps, the best practitioners of it. I'm talking about recycling. The practice of recycling old coaches, old administrators, athletes too. Fire a coach here and he pops up as the head man somewhere else. Kick a general manager out and he becomes the brains somewhere else. The sports world is a very small fraternity. The latest example of this is the naming of Lew Perkins to the Board of Directors of USA Boxing, the governing body that oversees amateur boxing, including Gold Gloves and USA Olympic boxing.

At the Mike: Ward back at the helm of the Chiefs

The Great Bend Chiefs and former Barton Cougar Roger Ward are off to an 8-5 start. Ward, coaching the team this summer, is right at home with a baseball nearby. A star player for Barton he went on to play on a very good Kentucky team in 1992, reaching as high as No. 7 in the nation that season.
