Charlie’s Inside Corner: Political endorsements

I see that Dennis Rodman has endorsed Donald Trump for President. Fitting? Kiss of death for Trump? Never one for the ordinary, Rodman-who maintains a friendship with the maverick North Korean leader Kim Jon Ung-and Trump do have a lot in common, even, perhaps, their politics. Both "shoot from the lip", both have wild and unruly hair and both have been at the top of their professions. I'm not sure how "The Donald" would look with lip, tongue and nose piercings!

McPHERSON- Anson Hall gave up a single late in the game while the offense delivered a 12-hit payload as the Great Bend Chiefs shutout the River Bandits of Oskaloosa 11-0 in day one of the AAA Legion State Tournament Wednesday.

Chiefs look to keep the pace heading into McPherson tournament

While the Great Bend Chiefs have yet to discover their seeding or who their first opponent will be Wednesday one thing remains certain for coach Roger Ward. When asked about any changes heading into this week's Triple A State Tournament in McPherson, Ward stated no changes are in the works.

Chiefs going to state

DODGE CITY- Roger Ward said it best. Seedings are lip service. The Great Bend Chiefs, entering this week's pool tournament in Dodge City as the lowest seed out of four teams, accentuated coach Ward's comment by sweeping through the competition with wins over top seeded Garden City Wednesday and host and third seed Dodge City Thursday by scores of 11-2 and 5-3.

Chiefs knock off top seeded Garden City in pool play

DODGE CITY- Coach Roger Ward and his Great Bend Chiefs took care of business early Wednesday as Great Bend delivered an 11-2 pounding of top seeded Garden City. Anson Hall collected the complete game victory as the Chiefs improve their season record to 21-18. Garden City falls to 24-5 and will enter the consolation round of this week's double elimination tournament. In the other game from yesterday's opening round host and third seed Dodge City (29-12) defeated second seed Russell (24-7) by a score of 8-1.

Fourteen swimmers qualify at Manhattan meet

MANHATTAN- Fourteen swimmers from The Golden Belt Barracuda's qualified for the District West Championship Meet in Manhattan last weekend. The 14 qualifiers joined teammates from the Western Kansas Swim team to compete against 25 other teams across Kansas.

The 42nd annual Kansas Shrine Football Bowl Game will be played Saturday, July 25th at 7:05pm at Fort Hays State University. The Golden Belt area will have three players on the roster; Layne Bieberle of Central Plans, Seth Owen of Hoisington and Sheldon Schmidt of LaCrosse.

DODGE CITY- Wednesday's opening round of the American Legion baseball post season will give coach Roger Ward an opportunity to gauge just how far the senior squad has developed as the Chiefs head into pool play at Dodge City.

Chiefs to face Garden City in pool play

The Great Bend Chiefs (20-18) are slated to face Garden City in the first round of Legion four-team sub state competition beginning Wednesday at Garden City. The winners of Wednesday's competition will play for the tournament title at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Kansas Heat win state title

WICHITA- The Kansas Heat 10u softball team finished their season as state champions in Wichita July 11-12. Throughout the season the team took first place in the Dodge City, Larned, Hays/Great Bend, and Russell tournaments and second place in the Salina tournament.

Quivira All Stars post 3-1 record at Lyons state tournament

LYONS- The Quivira All Stars won three and lost one over the weekend in Cal Ripken state tournament action in Lyons. On Friday the All Stars defeated Scott City by a slim 8-7 margin. Quivira then routed Rose Hill and Clear Water by scores of 19-3 and 24-4 sending the All Stars to the championship game and a rematch with Scott City. Quivira fell 4-2 in the finals game as Scott City claimed the state title.

GBRC to hold adult tennis tournament

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a USTA Adult Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday, July 25th, and Sunday, July 26th. The tournament is open for anyone ages 18 and older. GBRC will be offering the following singles and doubles divisions: men's open, men's 4.5, men's 3.5, women's open, women's 4.5, women's 3.5, doubles and mixed doubles. Play will be held at Veterans Memorial Park (17th & McKinley, Great Bend, KS). The entry fee is $14.00 for singles and $16.00 for doubles. The entry deadline is Wednesday, July ...

Braves end season in pool play, Chiefs fall in two to Russell

It was a hot and rough Thursday for local American Legion baseball teams. Following a 9-1 loss to Andover in pool play, the Great Bend Braves fell to Hays, 18-0 ending Great Bend's season.

Rebel softball wins state title

HAYS- Great Bend's 16U Rebel softball team won the Kansas KSA Class C state championship last weekend at the state tournament in Hays. Great Bend received a first round bye then defeated Clay Center 17-2 and Kansas Storm twice by scores of 4-3 and 5-2 in the championship game. The Rebels improved upon their 3rd place finish at state last year. The team includes players from Great Bend and Lyons. The Rebels are coached by Bob Marcum, Steve Neeland, and Alex Cape.
