Charlie's Inside Corner

It's not the same as Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities but it will do until something better comes along. Two Barton County cities. Two football teams. Twenty-three games. Twenty-two victories. Great Bend 10-1. Hoisington 12-0. State semifinalists both. Two cities separated by just maybe ten miles but certainly not separated by their efforts on the football field.

NHRA Summit Series Points Race

The Sunflower Rod and Custom Association (SRCA) Drag strip welcomed back the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Race Series to Great Bend on Saturday. The season comes down to the Sportsman Class with Brett Beck (Beloit) tied in points with Mark Walton (Hutchinson). The paradox of grass roots racing pitted Beck's '86 Mustang against Walton's '99 Miata. Although Beck was not present he did buy his tech card which awarded him 20 "show up" points. The Super Pro class was also in play with only 30 points separating dad, Mike Gordine (Salina) and his son, Scott. Dad drives a ...

Charlie's Inside Corner

NHRA Summit series points race continues

The history of automobiles and motorcycles being used for drag racing goes back as far as the history of the automobile itself. In the 1910s the gasoline internal combustion engine achieved dominance over all things run by steam and by the 30's most of the mechanical technology had been invented. Ford introduced the flathead V8 shortly after and through the 50s it was all about speed. As the cars got faster; the drivers got braver.

Charlie's Inside Corner

No, this is not about Donald and Hillary, though some of it is just about as silly. One of my favorite cartoon characters, Popeye, summed it up pretty well when he said, "That's all I can stands. I can't stands no more!"
