The No. 1 ranked Central Plains girls (21-0) rolled past Ellinwood 78-17 in the St. John Class 2A basketball substate. Central Plains (21-0) meets Pratt-Skyline (9-12) at 7:30 p.m. in Thursday's girls semifinals. The Oiler girls have won the last two Class 2A state titles.
Great Bend erased a 7-point deficit with a 21-6 scoring burst for a 62-51 Western Athletic Conference victory over Hays High Friday. The Panthers converted 21 of 30 free throws to outscore the Indians by 14 points.
The Great Bend girls basketball team (12-8), runner-up in the Western Athletic Conference, will travel to Maize South (13-7) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Class 5A Goddard Eisenhower basketball substate. The winner will play the Goddard Eisenhower (6-14) vs. Goddard (16-4) winner Saturday night.
PARK CITY – Great Bend's No. 1 ranked Cody Liles (132), No. 4 ranked Keaton Sander (138) and No. 5 ranked Christian Rivas (160) earned top five finishes in the Class 5A state wrestling tournament. The Panthers scored 50 points to rank 13th in the team scores.
On Thursday the Great Bend Panther bowling teams traveled to Salina to compete in the 13 team Regional Tournament. In boys action the Panthers finished in 5th place just 80 pins away from qualifying for State. The top three teams from each Regional qualify for the State Tournament. Salina South claimed the top spot with a series total of 2786 pins. Wichita Heights came in second place with a total of 2635 pins followed by Newton with 2511 pins. HAYS - Hoisington High's Christopher Ball (152) won three matches Friday to qualify for the Class 3A state wrestling finals for the second year in a row. No. 1 ranked Ball (40-0) will meet Rossville's No. 2 ranked Isaiah Luellen (39-6) in Saturday's championship match. Ball placed second in last year's 152-pound finals.
