ULYSSES - Great Bend High School quarterback Bryce Beck ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 8:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, breaking a 20-20 deadlock and lifting the Panthers to a 28-20 non-conference victory over Ulysses on Friday night at Maxwell Field.
A 10-0 win in Great Bend's WAC series opener against Dodge City was just the tip of the iceberg for what the Panthers had in store for their guests. The home team pounded out 13 hits in game two and coasted to a 17-0 blowout of the Demons to claim a 2-0 sweep.
Despite a 10-6 hitting margin by the opposition, Great Bend turned up the heat with eight runs over three innings to take a 9-5 victory overall Scott City in the Panthers' home opener Tuesday. Great Bend mustered only four hits in game two against Thomas More Prep (Hays) as the Monarchs claimed a 6-3 win giving the Panthers a 1-1 split.
In only their second meet of the month the Great Bend jv boys track and field team mustered 58 points and a third place finish out of six teams at their home invitational Tuesday. Garden City and Dodge were the top two finishers with 243 and 147 points. Liberal (41), Hays (40) and Hutchinson (30) rounded out the bottom six in order.
