Wallace County beats Otis-Bison

SHARON SPRINGS - Wallace County halfback Luke Schemm scored four touchdowns and rushed for 209 yards before collapsing on the sidelines after a successful 2-pointer against Otis-Bison. A few hours later, Schemm died in a Denver hospital.

WAMEGO - Ellinwood's girls made school history after previously capturing the runner-up state trophy. As each Eagle crossed the finish line, excitement built until the fifth runner passed the finish at Wamego Country Club.

St. John runners take fourth place at state

WAMEGO - After a 20-year drought at state, the St. John Tigers made quite a first impression at the Class 2A state cross country meet. The Tigers finished fourth with 130 points, just 12 team points from the third-place trophy at Wamego Country Club.

Indians gig frogs in overtime thriller

Improbable. Impossible. But they did it. The Larned Indians' Evan Skelton scored on a quarterback keeper for a two-point conversion in overtime on Pratt's home field here Friday evening as Larned grabbed a District win to end the season for both teams. The game was played in cool, rainy weather but , surprisingly, there were not a lot of fumbles and miscues.

Great Bend runner places 21st at state

LAWRENCE - Great Bend's Kerby Depenbusch finished 21st (17:00.7) in the Class 5A state cross country meet at Rim Rock Farm Saturday. The Great Bend girls placed 12th with 320 team points.

Oilers capture Class 2A title

EMPORIA - The Central Plains captured the school's first state volleyball championship with a hard-fought victory over Olathe Heritage 25-17, 22-25, 25-21 in the Class 2A state championship. The Oilers finish with a 44-0 record.
