CINCINNATI, Ohio- Call it a fitting cap to a long, successful career. This past spring Shannon Schartz stepped down from an illustrious coaching run that spanned four decades. But after 3,000 wins at the helm of the GBHS tennis program, Schartz cashed in on the golden ticket of a lifetime.

Great Bend High School season football tickets are now available in the activities office at Great Bend High School. Fans who have not had tickets in the past and are interested in reserved seating, please contact the activities office at 793-1560. The first home game is Friday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m. as the Panthers host Leavenworth at Memorial Stadium.

LYONS- Jahtziri Lara and Jordan Ewing picked up a win in No. 1 doubles while Allison Muth and Madison Murphy collected a victory in No. 2 doubles as the Panther JV tennis team opened season play Thursday. The Panthers placed fifth out of five teams competing while Ashland finished the day in first place. Host team Lyons came in second with Pratt and Chaparral placing third and fourth.

In preparation for next week's season and home opener against Leavenworth, coach Tony Crough and his staff have spent the past week making adjustments offensively with a new starting quarterback, a new starting running back and a new system for 2015.

Nearly a week into fall camp the Great Bend High School football team will hold the first of two intrasquad scrimmages Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Memorial Stadium. Great Bend will hold their final preseason scrimmage next Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. under the lights. Nearly 60 individuals makeup second year head coach Tony Crough's roster which does not include freshmen.

An examination of Hoisington's Week 5 game highlights in a road game against Kingman shows Cardinal free safety Steffan Dolechek's ability to make plays on both sides of the ball. Entering the contest, Hoisington was 3-1 and a win would tie the Cardinals' victory total from a 4-5 year in 2013. Kingman was receiving statewide attention after it shut out it first four opponents.

Great Bend senior lineman Alex Deist has worked for Jack Armstrong at his farm north of Larned for about 10 years. Deist, 17, has always enjoyed the work. He fills a variety of roles, including working cattle, mowing grass and moving supplies.

CLAFLIN- There are certain teams that don't regroup. They reload. Such is the case for the Central Plains Oiler volleyball team. Following a 2014 campaign that ended on a stellar 40-3 mark, coach Kim Rolfs and her Oiler girls will again set their sights on a berth in a state championship match.

Dr. Brian Harvey of Salina Pediatric Care will be on hand Tuesday, August 11 to meet with local and area coaching and training staffs to conduct response training for concussions during athletic events. Tuesday's seminar will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the GBHS auditorium.
