Sanchez takes first place at West Invite

HAYSVILLE- Jesus Sanchez continues his hot streak winning yet another cross country run. The Great Bend eighth grader posted a first place finish in a time of 11.23 at Thursday's Haysville West Invitational.

Sanders misses medal position by three strokes

LIBERAL- Halley Sanders just missed a top ten finish by three strokes scoring 48 at Thursday's Liberal Golf Invitational. Teammate Allison Neeland finished one strike behind firing a 49. Other Great Bend competitors include Carly Dreiling and Brooklyn Burkhart who both finished with identical scores of 54. Mikayla Bowne and Taylor Hommertzheim finished with scores of 55 and 58 respectively.

Kottas returns from injury to help lead Panthers to pair of wins

GODDARD- Morgan Kottas, back from injury, combined for 19 kills over a two-match stretch as the Great Bend Panther volleyball team recorded a pair of victories at Thursday's triangular at Goddard.

Panthers close out road swing at North Friday

Last week's 42-28 loss at undefeated Garden City gave the Great Bend Panthers a chance to examine and cleanup some mistakes that tend to exhibit themselves with a youthful bunch of ball players. The Panthers, 2-1 and 1-1 in WAC play, suffered four turnovers and 11 penalties for more than 90 yards against one of the most athletic teams Great Bend will face all season.

Area football roundup: Week 4

Hoisington will have the opportunity to improve to 4-0 this week as the Cardinals host winless Hillsboro. The last 4-0 start for Hoisington came nine years ago as coach Lonnie Irvin's Cardinals won their first seven games and finished the season at 9-2. The last 3-0 start for Hoisington came in back-to-back campaigns in 2009 and 2010. Hoisington started the 2007 season also at 3-0.

Winning streak ends for Panthers at Hays

Editor's note: Great Bend has an extra loss on the season that was not noted in previous articles. The Panthers fell 2-0 to Andover in the opening round of the Titan Classic at the beginning of the month.

LYONS- Great Bend High School's JV tennis team racked up 16 points for fourth place at Tuesday's tournament in Lyons. Five teams were in competition with Lyons (23), Larned (20) and Hays (18) winning the top three spots in order.

Neeland finishes in top 20 at Salina South Invite

SALINA- Allison Neeland shot a score of 46 over the first nine holes then fired 49 on the back nine to place 18th at Monday's Salina South Invitational. Carly Dreiling (48-52-100) and Mikayla Bownes (54-47-101) finished 24th and 29th respectively. As a team the Panthers finished with a team score of 402 for seventh place out of ten teams in competition. Goddard-Eisenhower was the top finisher scoring 352 while Manhattan placed second at 357. Derby followed a stroke behind at 358.

Depenbusch polls silver at Wichita SE

WICHITA- Kerby Depenbusch has yet to finish a race this year where he is not in the top three. The Great Bend sophomore's second place finish at Saturday's run at Wichita Southeast is Depenbusch's second straight silver medal showing and his third consecutive top three performance.

Buffaloes use fourth quarter run to down Panthers, 42-28

GARDEN CITY- Following a 28-28 stalemate after three quarters the Garden City Buffaloes broke away with a 14-0 run in the final period handing Great Bend a 42-28 loss on a cool, windy Friday evening on the western Kansas plains.
