Area football roundup: Week 1

Larned and Hoisington kickoff their season Friday evening and the Cardinals would like nothing more than to return the favor of a 21-20 double overtime loss to the Indians in 2014's opener at Larned. Hoisington used the sting of that loss to propel them on to an eight-game winning streak and finished the 2014 slate with a 9-2 season record including a 4-1 mark in league competition.

NICKERSON- Sydney Boxberger fired a score of 49 and placed seventh to help lead the Hoisington girls golf team to a second place finish at the 11-team Nickerson Invitational Tuesday.

Larned girls golf places third at Cimarron

CIMARRON- Larned's Dorothy Keenan shot a score of 48 to finish in fourth place at Tuesday's Cimarron Invitational. Haley Skelton ended the day shooting 50 for eighth place while Emma Ayre and Madison Gleason shot 52 and 53 for 13th and 15th. Leann Peterson tied with Gleason but lost in a playoff. Jaicee Walker finished with a score of 67.

Neeland captures seventh place at Hays Invite

HAYS- Great Bend junior golfer Allison Neeland recorded a score of 48 while finishing in the top ten at Monday's Hays High Lady Invitational. Neeland's seventh place finish was a point ahead of Liberal's Sarah Bayouth. Taylor Deboer of Hays was the top medalist with a score of 39.

Retired GBHS coach Schartz flips coin to open quarterfinal

CINCINNATI, Ohio- Call it a fitting cap to a long, successful career. This past spring Shannon Schartz stepped down from an illustrious coaching run that spanned four decades. But after 3,000 wins at the helm of the GBHS tennis program, Schartz cashed in on the golden ticket of a lifetime.

Panther football season tickets still available

Great Bend High School season football tickets are now available in the activities office at Great Bend High School. Fans who have not had tickets in the past and are interested in reserved seating, please contact the activities office at 793-1560. The first home game is Friday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m. as the Panthers host Leavenworth at Memorial Stadium.

JV tennis opens season in Lyons, freshmen in Dodge City

LYONS- Jahtziri Lara and Jordan Ewing picked up a win in No. 1 doubles while Allison Muth and Madison Murphy collected a victory in No. 2 doubles as the Panther JV tennis team opened season play Thursday. The Panthers placed fifth out of five teams competing while Ashland finished the day in first place. Host team Lyons came in second with Pratt and Chaparral placing third and fourth.

Panthers hold final tune up scrimmage Friday

In preparation for next week's season and home opener against Leavenworth, coach Tony Crough and his staff have spent the past week making adjustments offensively with a new starting quarterback, a new starting running back and a new system for 2015.

Panthers ready to scrimmage Saturday

Nearly a week into fall camp the Great Bend High School football team will hold the first of two intrasquad scrimmages Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Memorial Stadium. Great Bend will hold their final preseason scrimmage next Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. under the lights. Nearly 60 individuals makeup second year head coach Tony Crough's roster which does not include freshmen.
