HAYS - It wasn't a victory for the Great Bend High School girls' cross-country team, but head coach Todd Kaiser said he was happy with the effort he saw.

GARDEN CITY - In No. 2 doubles, Taylor Huslig and Carly Boyd of Great Bend High School captured first place at the Garden City junior varsity tennis tournament on Monday.
GARDEN CITY- Great Bend used a three-inning drive in the middle of Tuesday's first game of a WAC doubleheader and held off a Buffalo rally in the final frame to beat Garden City, 7-4. Despite some defensive miscues in the second contest, the Panthers rounded up all 11 of their runs during another three-inning span and defeated Garden City in an 11-8 final.
Nine runs in the first inning provided a little foreshadowing for Tuesday's Western Athletic Conference opener between Class 5A power Great Bend and Liberal. The Lady Panthers needed just six innings to complete two 15-0 wins.
GARDEN CITY- A 10-point spread separated the Great Bend girls swim team from host Garden City as the Panthers took the top spot and won their fourth straight competition at Tuesday's quadrangular.
Following a 2-0 run by the opposition, Great Bend used a free kick by junior Alondra Garcia late in the first half and sophomore Araceli Delgadillo's goal late in the second to knot the game at two.
Liberal High School boys track polled 136 points for a first place team finish at Tuesday's Great Bend Invitational. Of the six teams competing, Great Bend boys collected 121 team points and a second seed while Manhattan, Dodge City, Hays and Hoisington finished in order in the final standings. The Panther girls took fifth place with 58 team points and seven points above Liberal who finished last with 51. Dodge City was the top finisher in the girls division with 147 points.
DODGE CITY- A second half shoot over by junior mid fielder Alondra Garcia was all the visiting Panthers could muster as Great Bend dropped their second straight WAC road contest Monday night in Dodge City.
GARDEN CITY- Great Bend Middle School boys and girls track combined for 11 first place finishes at last week's Horace Good Meet. The girls posted 38 top three finishers while the Panther boys saddled 34 top three performances for a total of 72 medals for the day.
HAYS- Grant Harris sailed through the first flight of singles on Monday and helped Great Bend to a third place finish at the Hays Varsity Invitational.

LYONS- It was a tale of same endings for the St. John boys and girls track and field teams as they wrapped up competition Friday at the Lyons Invitational. With only a point's difference in the team scores both the boys and girls squads finished with identical fourth place seeds with the Tiger girls posting 92 team points in the final standings. The boys polled 91 points. Seven teams competed on both sides as Halstead took the crown in the girls division with 139 team points. Lyons was the top finisher for the boys at 122.
TOP 10 MEDALISTS:
HOISINGTON- The Hoisington Cardinal softball team struggled to a 1-5 start this year. This past Friday, the Cardinals were able to turn it around at home. After two come-from-behind wins over the defending Class 4A Division II State Champions from Pratt, the Cardinals moved their record to 3-5.
HOISINGTON- The Hoisington Cardinal baseball team lost 15-2 to the Pratt Greenbacks in the first of two games at Hoisington on Friday.
WICHITA- The 4X400 relay team of Jeffery Muiruri, Mason YellowWolf, Ty Yager and Antonio Carrasco ran a season best 3:29 in the Elite Division and posted a first place finish to help the Panther track and field team to four of their seven gold medals at this week's Shocker Pre State Challenge.
RUSSELL- Russell's girls track and field team dominated the competition at Thursday's home meet with a first place finish and a final team score of 98 points out of five teams. Hutch Trinity, Ellsworth, Hoisington and Hays-TMP-Marian rounded out the rest of the competition with scores of 86, 67, 61 and 59.
