Central Plains High School journalists win big at Regional contests

GBMS students earn Lone Star stunt show

Recently Great Bend Middle School held a school fundraiser in which 183 of the students sold two items or more. As a reward for their efforts, those students attended a BMX bike and inline skate show provided by Lone Star Action Sports.

GBMS orchestras earn top ratings

The Great Bend middle school 7th and 8th grade orchestras performed an in-house contest on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in which each group received the highest rating of 1 from Judge Summer Miller.

GBHS pianists go to state

Great Bend High School Regional and State piano contestants did great in their respective competitions. Regional was held at Fort Hays State University on Feb. 4. At regional those receiving II's were: Luke Maneth, Elizabeth Gerdes and Emma Bieker; awarded I's were Alyssa Keller, Lauren Miller, Allen To and Elizabeth Linenberger.

GBMS Jazz Band earns awards at Hutchinson

Members of the Great Bend Middle School Jazz Band traveled to Hutchinson recently to participate in the Bryce Luty Jazz Festival. This event brings together students from middle and high school jazz band programs and provides the them with workshops, practice and clinics.

FHSU graphic design students to display projects at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art

Packaging, print and motion graphic projects from graphic design students at Fort Hays State University will be exhibited in the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art, located on the first floor of Rarick Hall on FHSU's campus from Feb. 24 to March 15. Olivia Lowry of Hoisington will be one of the featured students.

At the Feb. 13 Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education meeting, interim superintendent Khris Thexton noted that volunteers spend more than 120 hours a week at district schools, on average.

GB senior chosen for state band

Great Bend High School senior Allison Regehr was selected for the Kansas Music Educators Association 5-6A Band which will meet in Wichita Feb. 23-25. Regehr was selected a fifth chair french horn through live auditions held in Salina last January.

The show goes on

A freak ice storm caused the 7th grade middle school choir concert to be rescheduled but after listening to the groups on Tuesday, audiences said it was worth the wait. The Choirs, students from the 7-1, 7-2 and 7-3 cores, consisted of around 60 students per core and Tuesday was their first opportunity to practice together. Because of the size of the groups, the cores are divided into two groups and one group practices one day and the other group practices the next. From the court to the classroom

Members of the GBMS 8th Grade Boys Basketball team took time out to read to preschool students. The team is learning there is more to basketball then just the game. On Friday, Coach Kyle Kriegh's team took time to read to preschoolers, "It was a great experience for our student-athletes to read with our Panther Pals. The 8th graders really enjoyed reading to the preschoolers and I wish we could spend more time with them. I try to emphasize building character, leadership and becoming better people, not just becoming better basketball players."
