University of Kansas recognizes Great Bend High School students

Three seniors from Great Bend High School were recently awarded the Summerfield Scholarship and admitted into the University of Kansas Honors Program. The Scholars Recognition Reception took place on April 3 in Lawrence at the University of Kansas Campus in Hasinger Hall. Dr. Kala Stroup, a Great Bend High School graduate, Woman's Hall of Fame Recipient at the University of Kansas and Watkins-Berger Scholarship Alumna was the Keynote Speaker for this very prestigious award banquet.

Sterling College students and professor give presentations at the Kansas Academy of Science

The Sterling College Biology Department was recently represented at the Kansas Academy of Science Annual Meeting held on April 8-9 in Baldwin City. Two students, Leonore Enfield of Raymond, and Tyler Wise of Clearwater, gave a research presentation titled, "Effects of Prairie Restoration on Small Mammals."

Sterling College graduate stars in new ABC show

Windell Middlebrooks, a Sterling College alumnus, recently debuted in his first role as a regular on the new ABC series "Body of Proof." Middlebrooks is certainly is not new to television as his recognizable face has been seen on the Disney Channel television series "The Suite Life on Deck" and in national advertisements as the Miller High Life Delivery Man.

Lyons one of KDHE Green School Grant recipients

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Waste Management has awarded grants in the amount of $68,702 to twenty six Kansas schools from districts across the state. The grant awards range from $200 to $4,500, the maximum amount eligible under the Green School grant program. These grants are for projects to take place during the 2011–2012 school year and projects include purchasing recycling bins, beginning composting programs for cafeteria waste and field trips to community recycling centers. This marks the fourth round of Waste Management Green School grants.

University of Kansas grad students attend workshop in Alaska

A Great Bend High School Alum, Alexis Reed, along with 17 other students and faculty from four National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship programs recently met in Juneau, Ak., for a workshop titled Understanding Rapid Environmental and Social Change in the Arctic: Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Interdisciplinary Science Across IGERTs.

FBLA State Competition

Twenty-two students traveled to the state FBLA competition on March 31 and April 1 in Topeka. The event was held at the Capitol Plaza hotel. Students competed in a variety of business events.
