Forty-one students join Mortar Board chapter
Forty-one students were inducted as members of the Ichabod Chapter of the National Senior Honor Society of Mortar Board at Washburn University. Also inducted as honorary members were William Beteta, executive director, Heartland VIsioning, and Rick Ellis, director, Center for Community Service and professor, School of Applied Studies.

PCC selects 2011-2012 resident assistants
PRATT - Pratt Community College has selected Kayci Huslilg, from Great Bend, as one of 14 Resident Assistants for 2011-2012. PCC Director of Student Life Rena Rodriquez said there were several qualified applicants that went through the interview process. Resident Assistants must maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA. They are student leaders on campus, assisting the Resident Directors with security of the residence halls, facility checks and assisting residents. ...
Leslie Wrinkle graduates from OBU
SHAWNEE, Okla. - Great Bend resident Leslie Rae Wrinkle received a bachelor's degree in nursing during Oklahoma Baptist University's 2011 Spring Commencement on Friday, May 13, in the university's Raley Chapel. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin presented the commencement address. Fallin is an OBU alumna, having attended classes on Bison Hill for two years. She earned a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University. She became the 27th governor of Oklahoma on Jan. 10.
Ready to serve: Rotc Units have Commissioning Ceremonies
Kansas State University's Army and Air Force ROTC units will commission 30 cadets as second lieutenants at ceremonies May 13, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. The Army ROTC ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. and the Air Force ROTC ceremony will be at 2 p.m.
Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science prepares to honor its first graduating class
Soon after arriving at Fort Hays State University in August 2009, members of the inaugural class of the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science gave themselves a name: the "Pioneer Class."

FHSU Commencement
HAYS – After experimenting last year with a special hooding ceremony for graduate students, Fort Hays State University will have a completely separate Commencement this year for students who are receiving advanced degrees. This year marks the first graduating class for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science, which is hosted at FHSU, so KAMS will also have a separate Commencement. For the first time, Commencement at FHSU will consist of three stand-alone ceremonies.
USD 428 Board of Education meeting
USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 S. Patton Road. Items on the agenda include the district's health initiative, Kansas Safe Routes to School program, approval of the 2011-2012 Certified Employees' Agreement, approval of supplemental salary changes, approval of the 2011-2012 BOE meeting schedule, approval to publish the amended 2010-2011 budget, Kansas Assessments updates, professional development update, and updates on state ad federal programs.

Holy Family School "Dress Down Day for a Cause"
Holy Family School had a "Dress Down Day for a Cause" in April and the "Cause" was Kans for Kids. Students were allowed to dress out of their uniform for one day by either donating $1 or bringing in aluminum cans for Kans for Kids. Senator Moran now accepting 2013 Service Academy applications
U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) is accepting applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies. The academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2014.
Local students named Governor’s Scholar
At the invitation of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Ethan Kaufman, Russell High School, Taylor Fry, Great Bend High School and Conner Birzer, Ellinwood High School, were selected to attend the 30th Annual Governor's Scholars Awards Program on May 5, in Topeka.
GBMS Above and Beyond winners
Great Bend Middle School announces the April and May Above and Beyond Winners. Each of these students was nominated by their teachers because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty in becoming a good citizen of GBMS. The students received a certificate and a pizza and pop luncheon with the school Administrators.
Sunflower Bank Donates More Than $6,900 to Great Bend and Ellinwood Schools and Students
Wrapping up the 12th year of the annual ABC Program, Sunflower Bank contributed $6,910 to schools and students in the Great Bend and Ellinwood area. Since the inception of the ABC Program in 2001, Sunflower has contributed $52,038 to schools and students in the Great Bend and Ellinwood area.
Dean’s Honor Roll at NCK Tech announced
Commencement ceremonies for NCK Tech were held in Beloit on May 10th. Students achieving a 3.5 – 4.0 GPA earned Dean's Honor Roll academic honors during the ceremony. BCC Foundation honors Mary Cohen with Distinguished Service Award
The Barton Community College Foundation honored Dr. Mary Davidson Cohen with the 2013 Distinguished Service Award during Barton's 43rd commencement on Friday. Cohen was unable to attend, but Barton Foundation Director Darnell Holopirek accepted the award on her behalf. Kans for Kids announces scholarship recipients
Kans for Kids announced its 2013 scholarship recipients. Any child who has received assistance from Kans for Kids is eligible to receive two scholarships from the organization upon graduation from high school and each year following while they pursue higher education.
Honor student
Barton Community College student Terra Hull, shown with President Dr. Carl Heilman, is inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society on Thursday evening in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel at Barton Community College. Alpha Sigma Lambda is primarily for non-traditional students. Its aim is to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. Barton had 36 new members in 2013.
First recipients of new Information Security certificate at BCC look to bright future
Barton Community College students Orlando Hernandez and Jesse Siefkes are ecstatic. Both have taken a huge step in their educational and professional lives by earning Barton's very first certificates in Information Systems Security along with four other students.

Panther Band members will present their Spring Concert at 7 p.m. on May 13 in the GBHS Gym. The band seniors and their parents will be recognized, as well as all of the band student's achievements during the year.

The 27 members of the 2013 class of the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science will walk across the stage at Commencement beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, in the Fort Hays Ballroom on the second floor of the Memorial Union.
Local educator awarded statewide grant
Mr. Stan Ewy, a teacher at Otis-Bison Elementary School in USD 403, was recently awarded a classroom grant by the Kansas Association of American Educators (KANAAE), a non-union professional educators association serving Kansas teachers. Mr. Ewy will use the funds to purchase an educational nutrition program for his physical education classes.
240 volunteers served for Love Sterling 2013
On Saturday, April 27, approximately 240 Sterling College students, faculty, staff and community members of all ages joined together to serve the town of Sterling, by participating in the fourth annual Love Sterling event, a town-wide day of service. Overall, Love Sterling was a community effort with an estimated 1,500 man hours being given over the course of the day.
