Eight new Rural Opportunity Zones counties partner in student loan repayment program

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Commerce has announced that eight additional counties certified by the Kansas Legislature to participate in the Rural Opportunity Zones (ROZ) program have decided to partner with the state in the student loan repayment program. Doniphan, Haskell, Meade, Morris, Nemaha, Ottawa, Rice and Stevens counties have voted to opt in to this portion of the ROZ program.

Barton County 4-H Holding Board announces the recipients of 4-H Scholarships for the 2013 year.

Bonny Boultinghouse, a TLC Twisters 4-H Club member, served as president of her Club, as Vice-President of Barton County 4-H Council and as 4-H Ambassador. Bonny led her club in "Random Acts of Kindness", an activity that invited the members to assist or help a community organization each month. She is the daughter of Shane and Jill Boultinghouse of Great Bend.

Local students awarded degrees from Fort Hays State University

The names of 344 students who completed requirements for associate, bachelor and graduate degrees during the summer 2013 term at Fort Hays State University have been released by FHSU Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Joey Linn, who is also university registrar.

Barton Community College employees recognized for years of service

Barton Community College honored 18 employees during an all-college forum Aug. 22, recognizing them for their years of service to the college. Awards were presented for five or more years of service with a recognizance at every additional five-year mark.

FFA Convention

Great Bend High School FFA Officers attended the 84th Kansas State FFA Convention this summer. Alaycia Ryan and Logan Evers were the GBHS FFA Chapter Delegates for the Convention. Logan Evers received the Bronze Award on his chapter scrap book. Three officers were selected to be part of the State FFA Choir - Mackenzie Thornburg, Erin Bowers, and Melanie Maneth. Mackenzie Thornburg was also selected to sing the National Anthem at the start of one of the sessions.
