The Kansas State University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present WinterDance 2014 at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, and Friday, Dec. 5, and at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, in Chapman Theatre at Nichols Hall.

NuScale Power employs Palsmeier

Dr. John Palsmeier, the son of Ted and Lillian Palsmeier of Conway Springs and the grandson of Betty Mae Axman of Olmitz, began working at NuScale Power in Corvallis, Ore. on October 13, as a nuclear probabilistic risk assessment analyst. NuScale is developing a new reactor design emphasizing significant advances in safety and John is part of the group which evaluates the ability of the reactor to withstand accidents which exceed design specifications.

The Barton Community College debate and forensics team's season is in full swing. The team earned awards at a tournament at Hutchinson Community College Nov. 1-2 and a two-part debate and forensics tournament at Tulsa Community College Nov. 14-16.

GBHS students gain leadership training at KAY conference

CLEARWATER - Ten members of the Great Bend High School Kays and 17 Kayettes attended the Area 6 KAY Regional Conference on Nov. 5 at Clearwater High School. The clubs returned with the highest state award possible. The Kays and Kayettes each received the Gold Award, recognizing their student leadership and service to their school, community, nation and world for the 2013-2014 school year.

McPherson superintendent named education commissioner

TOPEKA – Following a nationwide search, the Kansas State Board of Education today announced its selection of Dr. Randy Watson, Superintendent of McPherson Unified School District 418, to become Kansas' next Commissioner of Education. Watson replaces Dr. Diane DeBacker who resigned her position earlier this year to serve as senior advisor to the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

Huck Finn musical on slate at Sterling High School

The names Huck, Jim, Tom bring to mind what is widely considered to be the greatest American novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain. These characters along with numerous others from the classic plus the author himself will be brought to life as Sterling High School Theatre presents the musical "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 13, 14 and 15, in the school's theatre.

Barton Community College theater major Maili Kee of Salina took home a second place award at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held Oct. 24,26 as part of the West Central Regional Student Auditions at Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colo.
