SAN MARCOS, Texas - Deanna Warren, Great Bend was among the graduates during the 2012 summer commencement ceremonies at Texas State University-San Marcos. Warren received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in accounting.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Great Bend native Bonnie Postlethwaite has been appointed as Dean of University Libraries at University of Missouri - Kansas City for a two-year term, effective July 1. As the current associate dean of libraries with a long history of administrative service and an extensive knowledge of UMKC and its complex libraries' system, Postlethwaite is particularly well suited for this appointment, said Gail Hackett, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer came full circle last month when Katie Schwartz, Omaha, Neb., graduated from Millard South High School. Katie was diagnosed with an undifferentiated sarcoma the size of a small volleyball when she was 9 months old on Sept. 14, 1994. Her two cousins, Sarah, 11, and Shane Reif, 8, Hoisington, began recycling aluminum cans to help with Katie's medical expenses.

The Great Bend High School chapter of National Honor Society initiated new members for the 2012-13 school year on May 15.
The Western Kansas Chapter of American Petroleum Institute held its annual Scholarship Night at the Club at StoneRidge on May 23.
The program itself was a first for community colleges in Kansas and now one of its participants is the first in Great Bend to fulfill its requirements.
The Barton Community College Foundation presented the 2012 Distinguished Service Award posthumously to H. Lee Turner during Barton's 42nd commencement May 10. Turner's wife Betsy and daughter Stephanie accepted the award on his behalf.
Last Friday, Jan. 23, Hoisington Middle School students recognized National Handwriting Day by competing in a handwriting contest. Teachers Karisa Kaiser and Shari Blase collected samples from students, and also awarded a prize to the student that could guess the highest number of teacher handwriting samples.
Principals Honor Roll
Sarah Jean Neeland, Great Bend, a 2012 graduate of Great Bend High School, has earned a place on the fall 2014 Deans Honor Roll at Fort Hays State University. She is a senior majoring in elementary education. The Deans Honor Roll includes undergraduate students only. To be eligible, students must have enrolled in 12 or more credit hours and have a minimum grade point average of 3.60 for the semester.
More than 3,700 Kansas State University students have earned semester honors for their academic performance in the fall 2014 semester.
