Manhattan Area Technical College commencement

Manhattan Area Technical College held its spring commencement exercises on Dec. 14, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan. Bruce Snead, Director of Engineering Energy Extension at K-State and former mayor of Manhattan, delivered the commencement address to 80 graduates in 10 programs of study. MATC awarded 56 associate of applied science degrees and 24 graduates received technical certificates.

FHSU Student Recognition Program for 2013 coming to Great Bend

This year's edition of Fort Hays State University's annual 13-city, two-month Student Recognition Program series will begin in Phillipsburg on Monday, Jan. 28, swing into Colorado and Nebraska, and end in Beloit on March 12. The highlight at each event is the recognition of scholarship winners.

West Plains students donate caps to local cancer patients

Some patients at Heartland Cancer Center are enjoying new caps donated by the KAY Club at West Plains High School in Ransom and Bazine. The head coverings come in handy for those who have lost hair as a result of chemotherapy treatment.

Video contests inspire Barton's student filmmakers

On Dec. 14 more than 400 participated in Pittsburg State University's fall commencement exercises in the Garfield Weede Physical Education Building on the PSU campus. GBMS Above and Beyond Awards

Great Bend Middle School announces the November and December Above and Beyond Winners. Each of these students were nominated by their teachers because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty in becoming a good citizen of GBMS. The students receive and certificate and a pizza and pop luncheon with the school Administrators.

Kans for Kids announced its 2013 scholarship recipients. Any child who has received assistance from Kans for Kids is eligible to receive two scholarships from the organization upon graduation from high school and each year following while they pursue higher education.

Honor student

Barton Community College student Terra Hull, shown with President Dr. Carl Heilman, is inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society on Thursday evening in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel at Barton Community College. Alpha Sigma Lambda is primarily for non-traditional students. Its aim is to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. Barton had 36 new members in 2013.

Local educator awarded statewide grant

Mr. Stan Ewy, a teacher at Otis-Bison Elementary School in USD 403, was recently awarded a classroom grant by the Kansas Association of American Educators (KANAAE), a non-union professional educators association serving Kansas teachers. Mr. Ewy will use the funds to purchase an educational nutrition program for his physical education classes.

240 volunteers served for Love Sterling 2013

On Saturday, April 27, approximately 240 Sterling College students, faculty, staff and community members of all ages joined together to serve the town of Sterling, by participating in the fourth annual Love Sterling event, a town-wide day of service. Overall, Love Sterling was a community effort with an estimated 1,500 man hours being given over the course of the day.
