McPherson superintendent named education commissioner

TOPEKA – Following a nationwide search, the Kansas State Board of Education today announced its selection of Dr. Randy Watson, Superintendent of McPherson Unified School District 418, to become Kansas' next Commissioner of Education. Watson replaces Dr. Diane DeBacker who resigned her position earlier this year to serve as senior advisor to the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

Huck Finn musical on slate at Sterling High School

The names Huck, Jim, Tom bring to mind what is widely considered to be the greatest American novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain. These characters along with numerous others from the classic plus the author himself will be brought to life as Sterling High School Theatre presents the musical "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 13, 14 and 15, in the school's theatre.

Barton Community College theater major Maili Kee of Salina took home a second place award at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition held Oct. 24,26 as part of the West Central Regional Student Auditions at Metropolitan State University in Denver, Colo.

Step It Up For a Cure

Step It Up For A Cure is an organization in Hays sponsored by Alexis Pfannenstiel and a Fort Hays State University Leadership 310 team. They are making it their mission to minimize the impact of diabetes in the community by contributing funding to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and educating the general public about signs and symptoms of diabetes.

Renowned composer to perform on Oct. 20 at UPC

The Department of Music at Sterling College will host Lloyd Larson as the guest composer for the Fifth Annual Composer Festival on Oct. 20. Larson has published over 1,000 compositions and arrangements, resulting in a robust career as a national clinician. The Highland Singers, Sterling Chorale and Concert Choir will join Larson for a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the United Presbyterian Church in Sterling. The concert is free and open to the public.
