Political science department honors top students

The University of Kansas Political Science Department honored its top students at their Recognition Ceremony, with awards and induction into Pi Sigma Alpha last month at the Adams Alumni Center.

Ryan Joseph Bealer Memorial Scholarship Fund

Colton Lagerman is the 2014 Ryan Joseph Bealer Memorial Scholarship recipient. Lagerman is a 2014 graduate of Great Bend High School and will be attending the University of Kansas this fall, majoring in Chemical Engineering. With friends, he enjoys building projects such as a large trebuchet and gas powered bicycles, having cookouts, and playing the occasional video game. Lagerman excels academically and participated in National Honors Society, Student Council, and the Future Business Leaders of America.

Evers receives agricultural honor

Logan Evers of Great Bend High School was recently presented the school's highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by the Monsanto Company. He received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience. Logan's significant experiences and accomplishments have included maintaining a 3.98 GPA and Vice-president of the GBHS FFA Chapter. He also received a proficiency award in vegetable production.

Local residents inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Ashley Parrott of La Crosse and Jessica Kraisinger of Otis, both students at Emporia State University, were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

BCC honors graduates at Fort Riley

FORT RILEY - Donning big smiles and holding hands, Dionne and Derrick Sullivan were at the front of the room, about to make a big commitment, but they weren't getting married. They already tied the knot years ago. This time, the walk down the aisle was accompanied by "Pomp and Circumstance," and their commitment was to continued education and self-improvement. The Sullivans were graduating on the same day with associate degrees in general studies from Barton Community College at Fort Riley.

Barton Recognizes Student Ambassadors of the Year

Barton Community College has announced its 2013-14 Brant J. Ballhorst Student Ambassador of the Year awards. Named in memory of Brant J. Ballhorst, the award recognizes two outstanding student ambassadors each year. The winners this year were Holland Mosier of Great Bend and Kami Maxwell of Odin.

Kansas BOE invites public to participate in search for new education commissioner

The Kansas State Board of Education will host focus groups across the state to gather constituent input as the search for Kansas' new Commissioner of Education gets underway. Former Education Commissioner Dr. Diane DeBacker submitted her resignation in April to accept a position as the advisor to the director general of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

KAY club celebrates

The Great Bend High School KAY club celebrates a successful year, at a meeting on May 13. KAY President Justin Kuhlman slides the gold bar into the awards plaque that the club earned by having service projects, programs and leadership opportunities. Also pictured are Ryan Clark, Logan Zecha and Bryce Beck. The club learned that the GBHS blood drive received more donations than the Hays High School drive, and so GBHS gets to keep the traveling trophy. The club is sponsored by Tina Hiss and Ryan Pinkall

Marmie Ford, Inc. awards scholarship to local FFA member

Colton Churchill, an FFA member of Ellinwood HS-FFA, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Marmie Ford, Inc. and Ford Motor Company through the National FFA Scholarship program. Colton is the son of Chad and Shelly Churchill of Ellinwood.

Pawnee Height’s Academic Fair

Pawnee Height's Annual Academic Fair was held on April 23rd. It was entitled "It's Interactive!" because almost all the displays were something to play with try, or watch. Students from K-12 had displays throughout the school. Artwork and activities, included a huge cereal box house in the second grade room and a chance to learn how to write like an Egyptian in the sixth grade room.
