LINDSBORG - Brianna Hoffman from Larned is one of nine Bethany College students selected by their peers to serve as officers in the Swede Government Association (SGA), Bethany's student congress, for the 2013-2014 academic year.
At the invitation of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Tristan Yount of Great Bend, was selected to attend the 30th Annual Governor's Scholars Awards Program on May 5, in Topeka. Tristan attended Great Bend High School.
Mitchell Johnson is the 2013 Ryan Joseph Bealer Memorial Scholarship recipient. Johnson is a 2013 graduate of Great Bend High School. He excels in mathematics and is a National Honors Society Member. Johnson will be attending the Kansas State University and will major in Computer Engineering.
Two local businesses recently showed support for Barton Community College's Central Kansas Upward Bound program by donating grants to the cause. Midwest Energy donated $525 and Cox Communications donated $1,000. CKUB Project Director Patrick Busch said he hopes to secure more grants from local businesses soon.
The Dunlap family recently awarded the fourth scholarship from the Ryan Hugh Dunlap Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dunlap's family created a scholarship fund for students wishing to enter the fields of education and/or sports medicine. As a graduate of Great Bend High School, Barton Community College, and Southwestern College, Dunlap was tirelessly dedicated to his students and athletes. His lifework was as an athletic trainer and physical education teacher. He took pride in the camaraderie of team sports and watching his student's succeed. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) is accepting applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies. The academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2014.

Great Bend Middle School announces the April and May Above and Beyond Winners. Each of these students was nominated by their teachers because they have gone above and beyond the call of duty in becoming a good citizen of GBMS. The students received a certificate and a pizza and pop luncheon with the school Administrators.
Wrapping up the 12th year of the annual ABC Program, Sunflower Bank contributed $6,910 to schools and students in the Great Bend and Ellinwood area. Since the inception of the ABC Program in 2001, Sunflower has contributed $52,038 to schools and students in the Great Bend and Ellinwood area.
Commencement ceremonies for NCK Tech were held in Beloit on May 10th. Students achieving a 3.5 – 4.0 GPA earned Dean's Honor Roll academic honors during the ceremony. Area students recognized are: Carpentry-Cabinetmaking: John Kubick, Ellsworth and Richard Tice, Great Bend; Advanced Computer Information Technology: Nicholas Syx – Russell; Electrical Technology: Toby J Hubka– Wilson.
