Mothers who discuss simple arithmetic with their preschoolers at the dinner table can improve their children’s grasp of math. That’s according to a new study by researchers at Chile’s Pontifical Catholic University and at University of Michigan.

Julie Demel, a senior at Central Plains High School, has received a First Scholars scholarship to attend Kansas State University. Scholars receive a $5,000 scholarship over four years for a total of $20,000.
Central Kansas Christian Academy students recently participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart is a great organization that allows students to earn prizes while collecting money for the American Heart Association. The students raised a total of $1,910. 100% of the proceeds that the students collected will go to the American Heart Association.
Local students were among 19 new senators elected to the Student Government Association at Fort Hays State University in elections April 8-9. Eleven in the College of Arts and Sciences, five in the College of Business and Entrepreneurship, and three in the College of Health and Life Sciences.
Ten area high school students now have more money to put toward college. Wheatland Electric announced the winners of its inaugural scholarship program at its annual meeting April 15. Each student will receive a $1,000 grant from Wheatland. The recipients are: Marshal Hutchins-Scott Community High School; Skyler Hembree-Wichita County High School; Bailey Harris-Greeley County High School; Lakota Stucky-Syracuse High School; Marc Skipper-Deerfield High School; Kaitlynn Hammond-Holcomb High School; Taylor Hofeling-Great Bend High School; Leora Seiler-Conway Springs High School; Kaityn Dvorak-Caldwell High School; Andrew Mages-Argonia High School
Nancie Atwell won the first Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize award for being an ultra-exceptional teacher, the “Nobel Prize for teaching." She's donating her $1 million award to her school, a private school she founded specifically to develop innovations in teaching excellence, the BBC reports.
