Student comments on 'Barton Experience'

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees gathered Tuesday evening for its regular meeting and discussed one of its eight overarching goals, known as "ends." The one up for discussion this month was "Barton Experience."

Traveling band

Pirates of the Caribbean was the theme for the Great Bend High School combined Marching Bands field show. They participated at the Winfield "Mound of Sound" Marching Festival, and the Western Athletic Conference Marching Festival. They received overall "II" ratings at both events. "I" ratings were awarded for Color Guard, Drum Line, Visual Effect and Musicianship. Directors are Mark DeWald and Don Regehr; Color Guard instructor is Donna Becker, and Drum Line instructor is Alan Baxter.

GBMS Band students elected for honor group

Each year the Kansas Music Educators Association's Southwest District holds auditions for honor groups that perform at their mini-conventions in November. This year six Great Bend Middle School Band students were selected by audition to be part of the SWKMEA Middle School Honor Band. The students will perform a concert with other band students from the southwest section of Kansas at 3:15 p.m, on Nov. 4, at Dodge City Middle School.

Cierra Wood to represent JAG-K at Washington, D.C.

TOPEKA – More than 200 Kansas high school students, representing 68 Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) programs, recently competed in a two-day Leadership Development Conference at the Kansas National Guard Training Center in Salina, to determine who would represent Kansas at the national competition, in Washington, D.C. Local area JAG-K student qualifing for the national competition in Washington, D.C. is Great Bend High School's Cierra Wood.
