School speech contests helps students develop skills

Students from Holy Family School recently gained the opportunity to demonstrate their public speaking skills and take pride in personal accomplishments. On Monday, April 8, the students took part in a speech contest sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America, a national provider of fraternal financial services and programs.

KFTA's student application deadline extended

EMPORIA - Kansas high school students interested in careers in education have an extra few weeks to apply for the Kansas Future Teacher Academy. With the previous deadline of March 15 having passed, applications will now be accepted through April 12. Only 2 percent of pre-K and kindergarten teachers and 18 percent of elementary and middle-school teachers are men. In secondary school, 42 percent of teachers are men. Alex Roberts receives Distinguished Scholars award

PEA RIDGE, Ark. - Alex Roberts has received a Distinguished Scholars award from Arkansas Tech University, beginning with the fall 2013 semester. CKCA first semester honor roll

Central Kansas Christian Academy has released their 4th through 9th grade Principal's all A's honor roll and their A and B Honor roll for the first semester of the 2012/2013 school year. CKCA uses the following grading scale: 100 is an A+ , 96-99 is an A, 93-95 is an A-, 90-92 is a B+, 87-89 is a B, 84-86 is a B-, 81-83 is a C+, 78-80 is a C, 74-77 is a C-, 71-73 is a D+, 68-70 is a D, 65-67 is a D-. Anything below a 64 is failing.

Senator Moran now accepting 2013 Service Academy applications

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) is accepting applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies. The academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2014.

Sunflower Bank Donates More Than $6,900 to Great Bend and Ellinwood Schools and Students

Wrapping up the 12th year of the annual ABC Program, Sunflower Bank contributed $6,910 to schools and students in the Great Bend and Ellinwood area. Since the inception of the ABC Program in 2001, Sunflower has contributed $52,038 to schools and students in the Great Bend and Ellinwood area.

Honor student

Barton Community College student Terra Hull, shown with President Dr. Carl Heilman, is inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society on Thursday evening in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel at Barton Community College. Alpha Sigma Lambda is primarily for non-traditional students. Its aim is to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. Barton had 36 new members in 2013.
