ELLINWOOD - St. Joseph's Catholic Church will hold its annual festival on Sunday, March 17. During this fundraiser for the Altar Society, lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Parish Center, 110 West Second St. in Ellinwood.
At church each Sunday, we celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On several key days at the center of the church year, however, worship takes a particular shape. These central days have come to be known as Holy Week.
The next Lenten Luncheon will be Wednesday, March 13, at Foundry Methodist Church, 5401 Broadway Ave. Host pastors are Dr. Kevin and the Rev. Jana Baxter. The Rev. Dwight Dozier from the Assembly of God will be the guest speaker. The weekly luncheons begin serving at noon – not earlier – and end at 1 p.m. Freewill offerings will be taken to defray the expenses of the host congregation. The public is invited to attend all of the luncheons, which will continue through March 27.
David Barnes, director of the Shafer Art Gallery at Barton Community College, will mix art education with religion during an upcoming presentation at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2701 17th St., Great Bend. The free program "Approaching the Cross: Why Rembrandt Matters," will be presented at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 17, at the church.
I am a person who is fairly involved politically and I do not like what I am seeing. I have discovered, though, that it is tempting to stay focused on the bad things that are happening. If I do, I often miss the good things that are happening at the same time.

The Lenten Luncheon series continues with the next luncheon at noon on Wednesday, March 6, at First Christian Church, 5230 Broadway Ave. Host pastor is the Rev. Bill Johnson, and the speaker will be the Rev. Jim Strasen from Trinity Lutheran Church. Luncheons are from noon to 1 p.m. and open to the public. A freewill offering is accepted to defray the cost to the host congregation.
SALINA - Bethany House of Studies presents its 2013 Spring Event, "Tackling the Effects of Poverty," on Saturday, March 9, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 302 South 7th St., Salina.
Dominican Sisters of Peace will show the award-winning motion picture "Doubt" at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the auditorium of the Motherhouse, 3600 Broadway Ave. A freewill donation is requested. Refreshments and discussion will follow the movie, which has a run time of 104 minutes.
The other day I was listening to a talk radio show when I heard the host say, "What the h__ll do they think they are doing?" I said to myself, "I don't want to listen to language like that!" and changed the channel. Then one evening I was watching a TV show and one of the characters said, "Just quit b__ching about your friend and go talk to her." There I was again changing channels.

ELLINWOOD - Immanuel United Church of Christ is pleased to announce the installation of the Rev. Jennifer Fair as pastor and teacher of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Ellinwood. The installation will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at the church, located at 701 Fritz St. Holy Communion will be celebrated at this service. Edith Guffey, Conference Minister of the Kansas Oklahoma Conference of the United Church of Christ, will serve as preacher for the service. The service is open to the public.
Great Bend's First Baptist Church, located at 1600 19th St., will hold its annual Good Friday service at 1 p.m. today. An Easter morning breakfast will be served from 8-10 a.m. on Sunday, April 5. The public is invited.
HESSTON - The sounds of Russian folk instruments will fill Hesston Mennonite Church when Trio Voronezh rounds out the Hesston-Bethel Performing Arts season at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 12, on the Hesston College campus.
This Sunday, April 5, St. Mark Lutheran, 2101 Jackson, Great Bend, and St. Paul Lutheran, Galatia, will begin their spring/summer service schedule. St. Paul worship service will begin at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday School at 10 a.m. St. Mark will hold fellowship at 10 a.m., followed by worship service and Children's Church beginning at 11 a.m.
The Heartland Center for Spirituality staff and advisory council is in the midst of planning and preparations for our inaugural "Hero for Heartland" Afternoon Tea and Savory Delights. This event will take place on Sunday, April 26 with a come and go tea and tours of the Great Bend Dominican Motherhouse, 3600 Broadway Ave., from 2-4 p.m.
