Sisters take official stance against human trafficking

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Dominican Sisters of Peace have approved a corporate stance to end human trafficking, according to Sister Judy Morris, OP, justice promoter for the congregation of Catholic Sisters. "The reality of thousands of our brothers and sisters laboring in modern-day slavery compels us to act now to stop human trafficking and to serve the survivors of this crime," said Morris.

Our nation is at war with its foundations

The other day, I watched the address given at the Inaugural Prayer Breakfast. The keynote speaker was Rabbi Jonathan Cahn. I was pleased to see that he had been chosen, because I have listened to and read his work on the Isaiah 9:10 Scripture. This address was just as important.

Lenten Luncheon: Trinity Lutheran on Feb. 20

Trinity Lutheran Church, 2701 24th St., will be the site of the first in a series of six 2013 Lenten Luncheons sponsored by the Barton County Association of Churches. The public is invited to have lunch at the church at noon Wednesday, Feb. 20. The Rev. Jim Strassen is host pastor and the speaker will be Dr. Kevin Baxter, pastor of Foundry Methodist Church. The purpose of these one-hour ecumenical gatherings is to provide an opportunity to gather for personal reflection and spiritual growth during the Lenten season, and to experience fellowship with one another.

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood Knights of Columbus are having a fish fry from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at St. Joseph Parish Center, 110 W. 2nd St. Proceeds go to area charities; the suggested donation is $8 for people 11 years of age and old, and $3 for children under 10.

Garage sale will benefit Tempe accident victims

First Christian Church, 5230 Broadway Ave. in Great Bend, will be holding a benefit garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, to benefit the families of Cody Clark and Michael Tysver, two young men who were injured in Tempe, Ariz. Cody's dad Todd Clark is a member of the congregation at First Christian.

Monterrey Dinner raises funds for Haiti

Fat Tuesday is early this year and so it is time for the annual Monterrey Dinner at Great Bend's First Congregational United Church of Christ, 3400 21st St., from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. Tickets are $8 and $3.50 for children age 6 and younger; 3 and under free. Tickets are for sale at the door or in advance from church members, and take-out is available. An accessible door is located on the Polk Street entrance of the church.

Searching for love

CLAY CENTER - I coached myself saying, "If I make this basket then she loves me." After the ball slammed against the rim and bounced to the asphalt I said, "OK, the best out of 10." Just like when I was a teenager, every one of us is in search for love. Experts say more than 2 billion minutes a month are logged online by people searching for love. Additionally, many of the top songs on the Billboard charts deal with love and the most successful movies each year always feature a romance between the leading man and woman.

Buehler Mennonite cross flap inspires 'religious freedom' bill in Legislature

A sign on public land celebrating the city of Buhler's Mennonite heritage had been up for many years, gathering dust and rust, when the city took it down, refurbished it and tried to put it back up last year.

Fair to be installed as new pastor for Immanuel UCC

This Sunday, April 5, St. Mark Lutheran, 2101 Jackson, Great Bend, and St. Paul Lutheran, Galatia, will begin their spring/summer service schedule. St. Paul worship service will begin at 9 a.m., followed by Sunday School at 10 a.m. St. Mark will hold fellowship at 10 a.m., followed by worship service and Children's Church beginning at 11 a.m.
