January can be a new start for faith

CLAY CENTER – As a sunrise means the start of a new day, so January means the start of a new year. Our world is filled with examples of new starts. The toss of a coin on a football field is the start of a new game, the exchange of vows in a wedding ceremony is the start of a new life-long relationship and the first day on a job is the start of new opportunities. Examples of new starts are all around us. They can teach us a few things.

First UMC to host Unity Prayer Service

Members of the Barton County Association of Churches said they hope to have every congregation in Great Bend represented at a unity prayer service this month. Everyone is invited to the service, which will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, at the First United Methodist Church, 2123 Forest. The speaker will be the Rev. Carrie Buhler from Trinity Methodist Church in Great Bend.

Researcher works with urban churches to develop cancer communication plans

LAWRENCE - African-American men and women are No. 1 and 2, respectively, when it comes to mortality rates from colorectal cancer, yet informative programs aimed at reaching these populations are rare. A University of Kansas professor has published initial findings from a program aimed at studying the effectiveness of urban churches in leading efforts to communicate information about colorectal cancer to African-Americans.

Dream Center hosts open house and tours Saturday

Destination Paradise VBS starts Monday

Vacation Bible School at the Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church begins Monday evening, July 27 from 6:30-8:45 and closes Friday evening at 6:30 with a program for parents and friends. Hinton, Outreach for America founder, bringing Good News to Pawnee County

David Worth Hinton with Outreach For America will be ministering at Rozel Christian Fellowship at 7 p.m. Saturday July 25. Lutheran minister celebrates 10 year anniversary of ordination

The Congregations of St. Mark, Great Bend and St. Paul, Galatia will hold a joint Holy Communion Service on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia. A catered meal will follow the service at noon. The congregations are celebrating Pastor Adam Wutka's 10th anniversary of his ordination in the ELCA, as well as 10 years with this joint parish.
