St. Paul Lutheran Church ice cream social
St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia will hold a homemade ice cream social from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. Desserts will be served with the ice cream and a variety of toppings. Donations will be used for community and Christmas donations and will be matched by Thrivent. The public is welcome.
First Congregational United Church fundraiser
The First Congregational United Church of Christ is having a gourmet coney/hotdog fundraiser for Kaito Richter from 5 to 7 pm. on Aug. 31. Kaito, 2 1/2 years old, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, in his leg last November.

The Endowment Committee of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend awarded scholarships to 13 members of the congregation who will be attending college this school year. Awarded $500 scholarships were freshmen Darien Blackwell, New Mexico Junior College and Nina Burton, Barton Community College. Between 1840 and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, a quarter million people crossed the great plains on foot or in wagons as they moved west to begin new lives.
