I have been watching the efforts the American Center For Law and Justice (ACLJ) to get Pastor Saeed Abedini released from prison in Iran. This process has been going on since Pastor Saeed's arrest for being a Christian. He is a naturalized American citizen, yet the State Department and the Administration has done nothing to secure his release.
Here is the schedule of services for Holy Week and Easter at Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway Ave., Great Bend:
St. Joseph's Festival features meal, sale
The next Lenten Luncheon will be Wednesday, March 20, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church Parish Center, 4100 Broadway Ave. Host pastor is Father Reggie Urban, and the guest speaker will be the Rev. Sandy Kennedy from Faith Community Church. The weekly luncheons begin serving at noon – not earlier – and end at 1 p.m. Freewill offerings will be taken to defray the expenses of the host congregation. The public is invited to attend all of the luncheons, which will continue through March 27.
Dominican Sisters of Peace will show the motion picture "Journey of the Universe" at 6:15 p.m. Friday, March 22, in the auditorium of the Motherhouse, 3600 Broadway Ave. A freewill donation is requested. Refreshments and discussion will follow the movie, which has a run time of 56 minutes.
PAWNEE ROCK - A sunrise pageant is planned for Easter morning at the Pawnee Rock State Historic Site. The pageant starts at 7 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, Elaine Mull reports.
A school in Haiti may be able to keep its doors open, thanks to a donation from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend.
CLAY CENTER – "A historical fact which involves a resurrection from the dead is utterly inconceivable," wrote the late Dr. Rudolph Bultmann, an influential New Testament German Theologian. Presenting an opposing view is Dr. N.T. Wright. Presently, he is a world's leading Bible scholar having done extensive research on Jesus' resurrection. He says, "Because he is raised from the dead, he is Lord of the world, sovereign over the whole cosmos, the one before whom we bow the knee, believing that in the end every creature will come to do so as well."
Great Bend Aglow will meet Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Perkins Family Restaurant, 2920 10th St., Great Bend. The guest speakers are Steve and Jennifer Hopkins, Hoisington. Sign-in and social time begin at 9 a.m. and the meeting starts at 9:30 am. Everyone is welcome to attend.
ELLINWOOD - St. Joseph's Catholic Church will hold its annual festival on Sunday, March 17. During this fundraiser for the Altar Society, lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Parish Center, 110 West Second St. in Ellinwood.
At church each Sunday, we celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On several key days at the center of the church year, however, worship takes a particular shape. These central days have come to be known as Holy Week.
The Presbyterians are producing their famous recipe of Irish stew and will be serving it with homemade pie from 4:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14.

David Barnes, director of the Shafer Art Gallery at Barton Community College, will mix art education with religion during an upcoming presentation at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2701 17th St., Great Bend. The free program "Approaching the Cross: Why Rembrandt Matters," will be presented at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 17, at the church.
Lenten luncheon: Grace Community Church
St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will host their annual "Roast Beef Dinner" on Sunday, March 1st in the Church Fellowship Hall, 2101 Jackson. The menu includes roast beef, potatoes, green beans, roll, dessert and drink. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Carry-out will be available.
Great Bend churches will hold Lenten Luncheons every Wednesday from Feb. 25 through April 1.
ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood Knights of Columbus are having a fish fry from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at the St. Joseph Parish Center, 110 W. Second St. Sponsors suggest a donation of $10, or $5 for children 10 years and under. Proceeds will go to area charities.
Trinity Lutheran Church will observe Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m., and each of the following five Wednesdays, for the Lenten evening worship services which explore and teach about the Lenten disciplines.
