ELLINWOOD - Memory Makers will host a two-day scrapbooking event Friday and Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 503A SE 110 Ave., Ellinwood. This event runs from noon to midnight today, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
The Barton County Association of Churches will offer a prayer service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan., 20 at the First Presbyterian Church, located at 24th and Washington St. in Great Bend. Each pastor in the 38 churches in Great Bend has received an invitation, sponsors said. The goal is to have at least one representative from every church.
The Seventh-day Adventist congregation celebrated the grand opening of its newly constructed sanctuary located at the corner of 10th Street and SW 30th Ave. (one mile west of 10th and Patton Road ) on Saturday, Jan. 5.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - More than one and a half million families have positively changed their financial future through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. Updated in summer 2012, the now nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success. The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Dave on DVD followed by a small-group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing.
ALBERT - The Rev. Arthur Crider doesn't have a congregation, but he and his wife Mindy do have an evangelical Christian ministry in Barton County. In January they plan to launch a series of public events that will let more people know about "Critter Ministries." The first one will be at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Best Western Angus Inn Courtyard at 2920 10th St. in Great Bend.

There has been a great deal said in the news and by pundits about the shooting that took place in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, the 14th. What is sad about most of what I have read and heard is the focus on the external causes coupled with opportunists trying to use this tragedy to promote their agenda.

The number of people in need of a food box has increased over the last few years, but fortunately the number of churches and organizations distributing has increased as well, according to members of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, who recently filled and delivered over 90 boxes.
