Dominican Sisters declare weapon-free zones

Concerned about gun proliferation in the United States, the Dominican Sisters of Peace have declared all their Motherhouses, educational institutions, retreat centers, environmental centers, and health-care centers to be "weapon-free zones." Signs are being posted to all building entrances that state, "Dominican Sisters of Peace are committed to the protection of all life. Weapons are not permitted in this building."

Today and Saturday, Great Bend students will fast so that hungry children may have food. The public is invited to help members of the Youth Workers Alliance break their fast Saturday evening with a meal and concert on the southeast lawn of the Heartland Center for Spirituality at 3600 Broadway Ave.

Jehovah’s Witnesses invite all to attend “Let God’s Kingdom Come!” convention

Jehovah's Witnesses are inviting all in the area to attend a program focusing on a government that millions, perhaps billions, pray for God's Kingdom government, which is requested in the world-famous model prayer taught by Jesus Christ, will be the focus of the 2011 "Let God's Kingdom Come!" The Young Swedish Singers 2011 Tour

The Young Swedish Singers, a 34-member gospel singing group from Hässleholm, Skåne, Sweden, will appear in concert at Trinity Lutheran Church, 24th and Adams, in Great Bend, at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 19. The group's tour includes stops in Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Iowa, June 14-July 5.

Presbyterians assemble clean-up buckets for Disaster Relief

Members of the First Presbyterian Church along with the Deacons, Presbyterian Women, and Presbyterian Men's organizations have responded to a request from the Presbytery of Southern Kansas Disaster Response Team by providing clean-up buckets for use by Church World Service. The buckets will be used by residents in areas of the United States affected by this spring and summer's weather related disasters. The many disasters which have already occurred this spring in the U.S. have rapidly diminished the CWS supply of buckets.

Seminary Graduation of the Salina Kansas Stake

Alexandrea Arriola Nicole Phillips of Great Bend, was honored at the annual Seminary Graduation of the Salina Kansas Stake (an area similar to a Parish) on May 13. This young woman completed the four year program, which required her to attend 6 a.m. classes each day before going to her regular high school classes. These early morning classes were taught by volunteers, Alicia Carlton and John Berkheimer under the direction of Sterling Knapp, Stake President and Seminary and Institute coordinator. Fundraiser earns more than $70,000 for Catholic Charities

Providing Families Hope, a fundraiser featuring Elisabeth von Trapp, raised more than $70,000 to help Catholic Charities St. Anthony Family Shelter this past Friday night at the Beech Activity Center. Over 275 people attended the event.

End Of School Year Bash

The Youth Workers Alliance of Great Bend is hosting an "End of School Year Bash 2011" event today at CrossPoint Church Great Bend. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and all ages are invited. The "End of School Year Bash" will consist of 4 live bands: Brian Brillhart, Jamison, (local band) Echelon, The Lost Colors, and guest speaker Andy Addis. There will be a $5 ticket price at the door and children 10 and under are free.
