Zoo news: Brit Spaugh Zoo is on the move

The biggest news this week at Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo was the arrival of a new animal on Wednesday. (See story on page 1.) Seems like the zoo is always adding new animals, especially if one counts the hundreds of migrating birds that visit every December.

Barton's Criminal Justice Team wins trophies in national competition

Barton Community College's Criminal Justice Team, Sigma Phi Omega chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon, won trophies in four divisions of the Region III LAE American Criminal Justice Association national competition Oct. 15-17 in Overland Park.

Home for the holidays

The decorated gate at the southwest corner of the Courthouse Square, Santa's House, the ice skating rink and other seasonal decorations await local residents and their holiday guests as Great Bend prepares to launch its Christmas celebration Saturday. The parade begins at 5:30 p.m. followed at 6:45 by the lighting of the Mayor's Christmas Tree.

GBHS students place at Math Relays

Fourteen GBHS scholars participated in the 32nd annual Fort Hays State University Math Relays. Approximately 542 participants from 44 schools competed at this annual event. GBHS placed 5th overall out of ten teams in the 4 – 6A school category.

Habitat for Humanity hopes to raise $15,000 with upcoming dinner theater

With only a few months left until Habitat for Humanity plans to break ground on its next building project, the nonprofit organization's board is hosting the second annual "Barton County's Got Talent" dinner theater with hopes for raising at least $15,000. These funds will be acquired through a combination of ticket sales, table sponsorships from local business, and freewill donations at the event.
