Recycled art comes to Wetlands Center

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center, in partnership with the Fort Hays State University's Department of Art and Design's ceramics program, will be hosting a recycling art exhibition beginning next week entitled "Second Nature: Art from Reclaimed Objects," and recycling art workshops in November.

GB man hurt in work accident

A Great Bend man was transported to a Wichita hospital Thursday afternoon after he was injured in a work-related accident at Great Bend Industries, the Great Bend Fire Department reported.

TLC Discovery kids make posters

Monday, Sept. 12, the TLC Discoveries kids made posters for the two fire stations thanking them for all they do and being our hometown Hero's. This idea came from Lexie Brack after watching all of the 9/11 shows on TV on Sunday. She wanted to do something for our firemen to thank them. So the kids all signed the posters and she took a car load to deliver them. They had a good time talking to the men and thanking them.

Sen. Moran now accepting 2012 Service Academy applications

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) announced today that he is accepting applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies. The academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2012.

Flu shots

The Barton County Health Department will begin doing seasonal flu shots daily starting on Monday, Sept. 19, during regular clinic hours for anyone age 6 months and older. No appointment is necessary. Persons under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian, no physician's order needed. Pregnant women may receive the traditional inactivated influenza vaccine. Cost for influenza vaccine shots will be $24 or Medicare/Medicaid Card or Insurance assignment. Intradermal flu shots will also be available at the health department for people 18 to 64 years of age at $24.

Affordable housing grants available in Russell County

TOPEKA - Russell County residents will have access to part of a $100,000 grant to help families in northwest Kansas securing safe, affordable housing. The Kansas Housing Resources Corporation announced Tuesday than 10 non-profits and public housing authorities statewide will receive approximately $1.1 million in Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA).

Breanne Julian Fund

A fund has been established for 19 year old Breanne Julian of Hutchinson, who recently underwent an evasive surgery to remove a large tumor from her liver. The tumor was pressing against several of Bre' s vital organs. Breanne is the daughter of Rick Julian, granddaughter of Dick Julian and Pat Julian, and step-daughter of Erika Julian.
