Veterans Service Representative visit

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center at 1025 Main Street from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.

Living the Dream!

When I retired, I had a conversation with myself to do as many things as possible that are really fun and don't cause much trouble for anyone. Photography, hunting and fishing, digging in my day lilies, and mowing my grass have occupied most of my time. Establishing a relationship with the school has added another dimension to this process that gives me a whole different level of participation and enjoyment. Check It Out!

It's here! The twenty-one crates that contain the Smithsonian exhibit arrived on time! The display was assembled last Monday by Sharon Sturgis, the library staff, and other people from Goodland, Greensburg, Atchison, Perry, and Humbolt, who will also have the display in their communities. It took approximately four hours to complete the installation. Along with the Smithsonian exhibit, our community will be interested in seeing all of the work Sharon has done to feature our local teams and talents. USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 S. Patton Road. Swimmers to swim for a cause

The boys' swimming team at Great Bend High School will be holding a fund raiser for the Make-a-Wish foundation starting Feb. 27 at the Barton Community College pool. The team is hoping to raise $5,000 to be donated to a family/child in Great Bend or Barton County.

GBHS Hall of Fame luncheon tickets available

Tickets for the Great Bend High School Hall of Fame luncheon are on sale in the Activities Office at the high school. The luncheon is scheduled at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at StoneRidge Country Club. The Class of 2014 inductees include Aerospace Engineer and 1963 graduate of GBHS, George Nossaman, and Great Bend's long-time "Voice of the Panthers", Randy Goering. Tickets are $15. Dust Bowl series proving to be a hit

The Dust Bowl era series, "It blew So Hard" will have the second meeting from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8, at the Kinsley Library. Ninety-four people from Central and Western Kansas attended the first meeting in January.

Take an up close look at feathers, from colors to function, discover what makes feathers special and make a feather star. CKCA Open House

Central Kansas Christian Academy will hold their annual Open House from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Current students attending CKCA are invited to check out their school projects, have refreshments and join in fellowship. Prospective students and their families, along with families interested in the school, are welcome to attend. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the classrooms, sign up for Kindergarten screenings, meet the teachers and learn about the school curriculum. CKCA is independent of any local church. Great Bend High School Kayette’s annual Mr. Perfect Panther Pageant

The Great Bend High School Kayette's annual Mr. Perfect Panther Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at the high school auditorium. The evening features eight of the high schools finest senior boys competing in various pageant categories to help raise money for Mrs. Annetta Schaub, who is battling cancer for the second time. Seniors competing include Jayce Brack, Grant Harris, Walter Helms, Adam Jacobs, Josh Moran, Branden Paden, Blake Sullivan, and Ty Yager. Tickets are $3 for general admission and can be purchased at the door. All proceeds to benefit Mrs. Schaub.

​Strategic planning on BCC Trustees’ agenda

USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon on Thursday at Eisenhower Elementary School, 1212 Garfield. Kans for Kids Radiothon

The 5th Annual Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Radiothon will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 27, on all four Eagle Radio stations. League of Women Voters candidate forum
