Hoisington CDBG Survey starting soon

HOISINGTON - City staff last week attended training for administering surveys in order for the city to challenge key Census results. The existing Census results indicate a high percentage of residents are above an income threshold required to qualify for needed Community Development Block Grants that can bring significant dollars into the community. But with recent downturns in the economy, the City feels these results are inaccurate, and are standing in the way of acquiring funding to complete needed infrastructure projects.

Campus safety expert Katie Koestner coming to BCC

Barton Community College's Sexual Misconduct & Assault Resources Team (SMART) will host expert campus safety speaker Katie Koestner, who will present three sessions at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Barton Community College. The morning sessions will take place in the Fine Arts Auditorium with the evening session in the Barton Gymnasium. All are open to the public.

Wind turbines arriving at transload site

From massive wind turbines arriving to traffic control, there is a lot happening at the developing Great Bend transload facility, it was announced at a news conference Monday morning. A host of city, economic development and industry officials gathered in the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Office to make the presentation.

Old dorms to become PE classrooms

Some of the oldest student housing units at Barton Community College will be converted into space for physical education classes such as dance, yoga, Zumba and karate. The BCC Board of Trustees met Tuesday and accepted the only bid submitted to replace the roof on "housing units 3 and 4" and tear out the interior of the facility.

Pesky mice disable 911 radio tower

The Barton County Commission Monday morning ratified the purchase of replacement generator for the Susank TAC 17 communications tower. Mice destroyed the existing generator that was installed in 2011 by chewing through wires.

ICE PROMPTS DISASTER LETTER

Barton County experienced serious damage from the recent ice storm and resulting ice accumulations. Countless limbs crashed to the ground, thousands of residents left without electricity and travel became hazardous.

School board to review E-rate budget

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education will conduct a noon luncheon meeting Thursday, Jan. 26, at Eisenhower Elementary School, 1212 Garfield St. Items on the agenda include approval of a $293 check to the local FFA from the national organization for future scholarships, and approval to request E-rate funding for 2017-18. Eisenhower Principal Laurie Harwood and other staff will share information regarding the academic programs and the school improvement efforts at the school.
