Suspect claimed to be federal agent

A Marion County man suspected of stealing a car Saturday in Great Bend told police he was a federal agent, according to reports from the Great Bend Police Department. Calvin Hinz, 34, of Lincolnville, was booked into the Barton County Jail on multiple charges, including false impersonation.

Great Bend tackles drop in ACT scores

Great Bend High School has seen its ACT Scores creeping downward in the last five year years, Superintendent Khris Thexton told the school board this past week. The average score is also below the state average.

Potato Bar returns Sunday Sept. 17

RUSH CENTER - The Walnut Valley Senior Center will offer monthly a Potato Bar on the third Sunday of the month from September through May of 2018, Betty Misegadis announced. The only exception of the schedule will be in March, when it will be offered one week earlier because of the St. Patrick celebration. The Potato Bar will be open Sunday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the senior center, located at 220 Washington St. in Rush Center.

LHS welcomes foreign exchange students

Larned High School will be host to two foreign exchange students for the 2017-2018 school year. Phurideth, or Paul, as he likes to be called, comes from Bangkok, Thailand, and Xu Zhaokun, or Toby, as his American friends call him, hails from Hefei, China. They will be staying with their host parents, Ron and Corrine Wray.

Spray family plans donation to BCC

The Kip and Kelly Spray Family Strength Training Center at Barton Community College is sure to bear that name until at least 2034, and another $25,000 gift from the Sprays may extend the "facilities naming contract" through 2037.

Algae resurfaces at Vets

Great Bend's Veterans Memorial Lake is again under a toxic blue-green algae warning, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism announced Thursday afternoon. It is one of 11 lakes under a warning and three under a watch.

Access to GBHS football games, admission fees change

Great Bend High School will play Wichita Northwest in football action at 7 p.m. Friday at GBHS's Memorial Stadium. Admission prices have changed for the first time in over 10 years and will now be $6 for adults and $4 for students for varsity events.

Great Bend Police Chief Clifton Couch submitted Wednesday afternoon his resignation effective Oct. 15. The announcement came just a week after he was reinstated following his suspension in July amid the on-going controversy that has engulfed the chief and the city.

Ellinwood Council OKs Neighborhood Revitalization Plan

ELLINWOOD - A small quorum of three Ellinwood City Council members met Monday night in regular session, and took action on a number of business items. However, all three present, Gaila Demel, Ken Lebbin and Alan Brauer, opted to table action concerning options for payment of a proposed bond and authorizing the resolution for bond sale until a full council can be present. That meeting is tentatively planned for the first week of October, and the city will announce the date through the media as soon as it is set.
