Tickets for 'Barton County's Got Talent' now available

Tickets are now on sale for the next "Barton County's Got Talent" dinner theater, set for Jan. 19, 2013, at Grace Community Church. The event is a fundraiser for the area Habitat for Humanity.

Zoo News: Eagles treated at Raptor Center

One section of Brit Spaugh Zoo that is seldom seen by the public is currently housing several birds of prey. The zoo is headquarters for the Great Bend Raptor Center, where injured birds are rehabilitated. This week the center is treating a Golden Eagle and a Bald Eagle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Zookeeper Stacie Hayes said one of the eagles was shot in central Kansas, and one came from western Kansas. Shooting these birds is a crime and is being investigated by Fish and Wildlife officials.

Barton debate team fares well at large tournament

The Barton Community College debate team members landed several top spots against stout competition on Dec. 1, when they traveled to Webster University in St. Louis, Mo., to compete in the 26th Annual Webster Classic. Featuring competitors from 11 universities, the tournament proved to be a difficult hurdle in the Cougars' season.

GBHS Speech Team qualifies one to nationals

The District National Qualifying Speech tournament was held at Bethel College in Newton on April 17 and 18. Eight students competed and placed 7th in sweepstakes out of 14 schools. Three students advanced to the elimination rounds. Sophomore, Hadley Murphy, was a semifinalist in Original Oration. Sophomore, Ashtin Heath and Junior, Malia Clark, advanced to Finals in Dramatic Interpretation. Malia Clark placed 5th and Ashtin Heath placed 4th qualifying her to Nationals. Ashtin Heath will compete at the national tournament in Dallas, Texas, June 13th through June 19th.

Personnel on BCC agenda

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will deal with personnel matters at the next meeting, set for 4 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. An executive session for private discussion of personnel is on the agenda, followed by the renewal or non-renewal of faculty contracts for next year.

Benefit dinner to be held for Charles Bahr

A benefit dinner for Charles Ultan Bahr to help with hospital costs will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olmitz. Hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips and a dessert will be served. There will also be a cash raffle. Charles is the son of Joey and Anita Bahr. A free will donation will be taken.
