Great Bend Public Library staff to attend Salina conference

Friday, Great Bend librarians and CKLS staff will travel to Salina to hear Valerie Gross speak about why Kansas needs libraries more than ever. She will outline how libraries equal education for a community, and it happens in three ways: self-directed education, research assistance and instruction, and instructive and enlightening experiences. GBPL board members were invited to attend. The trend of highlighting and partnering with schools and the community through library leadership is already underway, according to Children's Services Supervisor Dayna Ball, who presented the department report to the GBPL Library Board Monday afternoon.

Hoisington City Council considering creation of fire district

HOISINGTON - In its efforts to find a way to pay for a new fire truck, the City of Hoisington will seek to follow the example set by neighboring Claflin and begin working towards the creation of a fire district. The move would create a broader, more stable pool of funding by distributing the cost equally to all townships and cities in the district, City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said. Discussion of the potential creation of a fire district was added to the agenda at the start of the meeting.

Couple arrested on physical abuse and rape charges

A Great Bend couple was arrested Friday on rape and child abuse charges stemming from an investigation that started last April, according to the Great Bend Police Department.

Cardinals debate well at Lyons

Hoisington High School debaters did well at Lyons recently. In the open division, Corbin Crawford and Taylor Schwartz went 4-1 and placed eighth out of 44 teams. They defeated teams from Hays, Pratt, Dodge City, and Silver Lake. They lost to a team from Tonganoxie.
