Butterflys move cross our nation

A "net brigade" of volunteer butterfly hunters captured, tagged and released 52 monarch butterflies Saturday at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Fifty-two monarchs were captured and tagged earlier, for a total of 102, said Pam Martin, Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks & Tourism educator at the KWEC.

After years of battling toxic blue-green algae in Veterans Memorial Lake, City of Great Bend officials finally got some good news from state officials this week. They were informed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment that the beleaguered lake was no longer on its warning or watch lists.

Street repairs to begin Monday

Earlier this month, the Great Bend City Council paved the way for $1.21 million in improvements to about 90 blocks of city streets. That work begins this coming week, City Administrator Howard Partington said.

Final household hazardous waste collection dates announced

The Barton County Landfill, located at 350 NE 30 Road northwest of Great Bend, has listed its final household hazardous waste collection dates for the year. The service runs on the third Saturdays of the month from April through October and is for residential customers only from Barton, Pawnee and Ellsworth counties.

Boil water advisory rescinded for city of Paradise in Russell County

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the public water supply for the City of Paradise located in Russell County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a water main break. Inadequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Fifi, the only B-29 Superfortress still flying, arrived at the Great Bend Municipal Airport Thursday afternoon. The crew from the Commemorative Air Force will be selling rides in this World War II warbird during the Great Bend AirFest, going on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
