Absconder arrested in traffic stop; K-9 indicates drugs

The Great Bend Police Department's K-9 unit was called to investigate after a traffic stop in the 900 block of Kansas Ave. at 11:05 p.m. Saturday. Suspected methamphetamine was found and two people were arrested.

Foundation awards nearly $100,000 in community grants

The Russell County Area Community Foundation is pleased to announce the 2015 spring grant recipients. The Foundation received 37 grant applications with requests totaling more than $200,000. A total of $99,620 in grants were awarded for charitable projects across the Russell County area.

It has been a fairly hectic week. I have a group of friends from Canada who come to spend a week hunting turkeys with traditional archery. It is funny to watch spectacular hunters who successfully hunt moose, caribou, elk, deer, bear and other big game with their long bows and recurves get the "shakes" over a turkey. Central Kansas Dream Center aiming to bring bicyclists together

Central Kansas Dream Center (CKDC) is interested in creating a community bike rental program that would promote a healthier community and bring people together, and CKDC Executive Director Kimberly Becker and many others are excited about the possibilities. With the efforts being made on Great Bend's walking and biking paths, more residents will be encouraged to walk and ride but may need a bicycle.

Church rummage sale Saturday

The members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 3400 21st Street, will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18. This is a fundraiser where all items are by donation. A portion of the proceeds will be used to support local missions including the Prairie Godmother's, Barton County Emergency Aid and missions throughout the year. Model RR group plans open house

The Golden Belt Model Railroad Association will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the First United Methodist Church, 2123 Forest Ave. in Great Bend. There will be refreshments and door prizes, along with operating model trains and layouts featuring Std., G, O, HO and N gauge trains.

​Veterans coffee klatch will visit Doonan Truck Museum

Veterans and other guests who meet regularly for coffee and doughnuts at the American Legion Post in Great Bend will changes things up a bit this Wednesday, April 22. The coffee and doughnuts will be at the Doonan Truck Museum east of Great Bend at 9:30 a.m. Any veteran who needs a ride may call Bill or Cheryl Pickle before Tuesday.
