KDOT announces approved January bids

The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects in Kansas. The letting took place Jan. 18 in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work.

RUSSELL - Kansas celebrated its 156th birthday on Sunday, Jan. 29. The Kansas House of Representatives celebrated Kansas Day this past Monday on Jan. 30 and recognized Robert Bergen, artist and creator of the 22 foot bronze Kansa warrior statue on top of the statehouse dome and the filming crew for the documentary film, "Home on the Range." In addition to the activities on the House floor, there were opportunities to view the "Home on the Range" at the Capitol. Kansas entered the Union as the 34th state on Jan. 29, 1861.

Kaiser charged in Barton County

On Thursday, Feb. 2, a complaint was filed with Barton County District Court charging Todd Eric Kaiser with one count of sexual exploitation of a child. The defendant was previously arrested and posted a $50,000 surety bond, which remains in effect. A first appearance is expected to be scheduled on March 6.

Promise seen in new juvenile justice approach

February marks the first year of the implementation for a new approach to juvenile justice in Southeast Kansas, and state and local officials say it will now be expanded to address juvenile offenders statewide.

Two from Great Bend charged in Larned robbery

LARNED - Justin Miler, 25 of Great Bend, appeared in custody Wednesday morning before Pawnee County Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell. Judge Cowell advised the defendant he is charged with aggravated robbery, a severity level 3 person felony.

Zoo news: A Bough for Bonnie the Black Bear

Bonnie, the Black Bear at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, received a new piece of furniture Monday when DJ's Tree Service delivered the remains of a huge maple tree. Because the City of Great Bend does not own a crane, Stone Sand Company donated use of the crane that lifted the hollow tree trunk over the fence and dropped it into the exhibit.

Scouts make oodles of noodles

Boy Scouts Pack 184 and Troop 184 are getting ready to serve some hot soup to the community this coming Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Elks Lodge, 12th and Kansas Ave., Great Bend. Serving will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

American Legion announces February events

EDWARDS COUNTY - Kansas Highway Patrol reports a fatality accident that occurred at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 50 at 80th Ave. in Edwards County, 1 mile west of Kinsley.

The Barton County preliminary damage assessment meeting for government entities has been scheduled for 10 a.m. today, in the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main Street, room 101, Great Bend.
