​Hope Lutheran Church bazaar scheduled

RUSH CENTER - The women of the Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center, also known as WELCA (Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) have set the date of their annual bazaar for Friday, Nov. 7, in the church basement. A meal will be served from 5-7 p.m., with selections such as sloppy joes, sandwiches, pie and sweet rolls. An auction at 7 p.m. will feature handcrafted items including hand-quilted quilts of all sizes, plants and baked goods.

Tickets about to go on sale for 'A Christmas Carol'

BCC library offers freebies, game night

The Learning Resource Center at Barton Community College will give away ice scrapers on Monday Nov. 3. Deedra Gibbons said people can stop by and pick up a free Barton Library ice scraper for as long as supplies last. They are available to students, BCC employees and community members.

Shoe drive for the needy to start Saturday

Tena Westenhaver of Great Bend is kicking off her Soles4Souls Shoe Drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at her home, 1801 VanBuren. This is just the first effort in her year-long campaign to collect 25,000 pairs of shoes the Soles for Souls organization can distribute to the needy and victims of disasters.

City Council meets Monday night

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. On the agenda are the city's health insurance renewal, street closures for holiday activities, the Prairie Rose Drive paving project and an auto rental lease agreement for the Great Bend Municipal Airport.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes an employee recognition award to Donna Shaffer of the Health Department, bridge engineering services, Special Alcohol Funding distribution, Barton County Community Development Advisory Board appointments and longevity pay.

Crane Tour Postponed

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will postpone the Crane Tour scheduled for today due to lower than expected numbers of cranes. The new date is Saturday, November 1, at 5:30 p.m. Call the KWEC at 1-877-243-9268 to register for the tour – space is available in the KWEC's van, or participants are welcome to follow in their own vehicles to crane viewing sites.

The Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau announced the winners of the second quarter entries for the Focus on the Byway photo contest. Entries for the third quarter are being accepted now, said Cris Collier, president of the visitors bureau.

KWEC moves to 'winter' hours Nov. 1

From Nov. 1 through March 31, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, located northwest of Great Bend on K-156, is closed on Mondays. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27. After that, hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free. The Education Center will be closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Cheyenne Bottoms Crane Viewing Tour offered

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center staff will lead a guides tour through Cheyenne Bottoms starting at 5:30 Tuesday, Oct. 28. Tours will begin and end at the KWEC, 592 NE K-156, Great Bend. From there, participants will board the KWEC van for a tour to find groups of cranes in the Cheyenne Bottoms area.

USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon on Thursday at Riley Elementary School, 1515 10th Street. Items on the agenda include change in teacher recruitment software and approval to accept an anonymous donation of $5,000 for playground equipment at Park Elementary school. Riley Elementary School Principal JoAnn Blevins and other staff members will share information regarding the academic programs and the school improvement efforts at Riley.
