Barton County Health Department flu shot outreach scheduled

Barton County Health Department has scheduled community outreach for influenza and pneumonia vaccinations for Tuesday, Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Oct. 28. Department staff will be providing regular, high dose, and intranasal flu vaccine for adults and children and pneumonia vaccine on Oct. 27, at Susank Agco Corporation from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.; at Beaver Fire Station 10 - 11 a.m.; at Odin Store 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.; and at Claflin Fire Station 1 - 2 p.m.

Whooping Crane migration is underway in central Kansas

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge staff members were surprised on Saturday to find that a pair of adult Whooping Cranes briefly visited Little Salt Marsh on the migration route southward. This is the third-earliest fall migration occurrence at Quivira, and only the fourth time in history that Whooping Cranes have arrived prior to Oct. 15. Annually each fall, a few dozen of these rare birds are sighted at Quivira. The earliest record occurred in 2000, when a pair stopped at the Refuge on Oct. 6.

City to hire consultant for water-related projects

At the Oct. 5 Great Bend City Council meeting, City Administrator Partington reported on various scenarios for making improvements to the city's aging water line. Acting on a consensus of the council he developed a plan using a combination of reserves, fund transfers and the issue of new bonds.

BCC offers free citizenship classes
