Summer is a time for children to have fun, relax and hang out with friends, but for some they had the opportunity to learn about the area around them and how Barton County has played a role in the oil and gas industry.

Local officials urge safety during harvest season

It is that time again for farmers to be busy out in their fields for wheat harvest and this means slower moving farm implements along road ways throughout Barton County and drivers are ask to take extra precautions while on these roads.

SEASONED GROWERS

Dan and Joyce Wapelhorst live west of Great Bend. For the past 12 years, they've been regular vendors at Great Bend farmers markets. But they've been gardening at their rural home for the past 30 years, and it shows. The well manicured lawn leads to a colorful flower garden with gazebo and pond focal points. During the summer months, the couple spend much time together there, enjoying the outdoors. When we visited, their grandson and helper was enjoying the pleasant day with them, coloring near the pond.

Foundry Church’s Mission

Donated items by Foundry Methodist Church members will be provided free to anyone at 5401 Broadway from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Great Bend. Toys, clothes, furniture, kitchen items and a variety of shoes and sandals are available.

Soggy situation

HOISINGTON - Thanks to the quick thinking of Hoisington Public Works employees, some elbow grease and a little bit of luck, residents of Hoisington avoided what could have been a very hot day made hotter by an emergency order to conserve water.

Ellsworth County under warning

WICHITA - The National Weather Service in Wichita issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Ellsworth County in central Kansas until 6:15 p.m. Locations impacted include Ellsworth, Wilson, Kanopolis, Holyrood, Lorraine, Kanopolis Lake, Ellsworth Airport and Kanopolis State Park. This includes interstate 70 between mile markers 206 and 228.

Huelskamp staff to host office hours in Barton County

Congressman Tim Huelskamp announced that a staff representative from his Kansas office will be available in Great Bend from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 20, at Front Door Community Center, 1615 Tenth Street. During these office hours, Huelskamp's staff representative will be available to meet individually with Kansans to learn about their concerns and to serve as a resource for constituents struggling to navigate bureaucratic red tape. Constituents seeking assistance are encouraged to schedule an appointment by contacting Congressman Huelskamp's Dodge City district office at 620-225-0172.

School districts wait for cues from state

Great Bend USD 428 and other school districts are waiting to see whether the Kansas Legislature can correct K-12 fund inequities ahead of a June 30 deadline set by the Kansas Supreme Court. A special session starts June 23, and if the deadline is not met the justices noted possible closure of the education system.

BOE considers allowing air rifle events

Great Bend USD 428 school board members have received drafts of proposed policy revisions and two new policies. These polices were included in board materials for a "first reading" at the June 13 meeting, and will be voted on at the July meeting.

County seeks to replace crumbling limestone bridge

After the County became involved with the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway, several Works Progress Administration native-stone bridges in the northern part of the County were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Baseball expert to speak in Great Bend, McCracken

McCRACKEN - Baseball historian Phil Dixon will speak at the McCracken Community Building at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 26. The public is invited to come for lunch at 1 p.m., followed by Dixon's program on the history of the Kansas City Monarchs. Freewill donations will be accepted for the McCraken Public Library.
